NOTTINGHAM Rugby got back to winning ways against Moseley in a disappointing game at Meadow Lane.

The cold, wet conditions made life difficult for both sides but the Green and Whites' class proved too much for the visitors as they won 30-15 in front of 1,303 fans.

Nottingham looked like they were going to run riot when they raced to a 15-0 lead after just 12 minutes however, they then took their foot off the pedal and allowed Moseley back into the game.

And to be fair to Moseley, if they had taken two golden opportunities early in the second half, they might well have returned home with all the points.

However, it was the home side who produced the rugby, albeit a very small dose, and the guile to score the four tries which wrapped up the bonus point and kept them securely in third place in the Championship.

"I think our guys were probably a little bit nervous," said director of rugby Glenn Delaney. "Especially in that middle period when they were chipping away and taking their points. The score was 18-15 at half-time and our guys were probably thinking, we are playing all the footy and we are not miles ahead.

"We had to scrap for the win, I'm happy with the bonus point and we've ended the losing run and starting a winning one, hopefully.

"This is a big month for us, we've got our first points and now we must keep it going against Birmingham and Solihull next week."

Tim Taylor opening the scoring after just three minutes from a penalty and with Moseley penned back in their own 22, Luke Sherriff scored the first try on ten minutes and Taylor converted.

Two minutes later, Taylor kicked ahead, Billy Twelvetrees won the chase, gave the ball to Craig Hammond and was then on hand to receive the return pass to score the second try.

Ill-discipline from the home side allowed Moseley back in as Tristan Roberts converted four penalties in the 14th, 22nd, 25th and 34th minutes to close the gap and the same player then dropped a goal to close the gap to 18-15 on the stroke of half-time.

Almost immediately after the re-start, Nottingham were under pressure when Dan Hemmingway was sin-binned.

Winger Nathan Bressington had a golden opportunity to score a try for Moseley but let the ball slip out of his hands right on the try line and, soon afterwards a wayward pass cost them another try-scoring opportunity.

Nottingham weathered the storm and Ben Johnston made the game secure with a try on 57 minutes and Twelvetrees got their bonus point when he crossed the try line in the fourth minute of added time. Taylor added the extras.

"It was hard work and it was always going to be," said Dealney. "We were 15 points up after 15 minutes and then we made some errors which allowed them some territory between the 22 and our ten metre line and they kept taking points on penalties.

"When you give penalties away you lose momentum and they took the points when they were on offer.

"It was really hard work but I was very impressed by our defence in the second half when we defended the line with 14 blokes at one stage and we denied them a try. The defence then was outstanding.

"It was quite a frustrating game. It promised a lot, especially after the first ten minutes, it was good free-flowing stuff but we just went off the boil after that.

"The errors that we made, especially from dropped balls from kick-offs allowed them easy possession in our third, we were bit poor in terms of the penalties we gave away, that was disappointing."

Nottingham: Vesty, Cobden (Casson), Twelvetrees, Johnston, Streather, Taylor, White (Usasz), Parr (Buxton), Youngs, Du Plessis, Green, Rouse (Nimmo), Hammond, Sherriff, Hemmingway.

Results: Cornish Pirates 10-12 Doncaster Knights; Nottingham 30-15 Moseley; Bedford Blues 16-19 Plymouth Albion; Birmingham & Solihull 6-29 London Welsh; Exeter Chiefs 45-11 Coventry; Rotherham Titans 0-15 Bristol Rugby.
