Nottingham to become boom town with plans for £500m Broadmarsh expansion
A £500m plan to redevelop Nottingham's Broadmarsh Centre has today been unveiled.
The long-awaited plan from Broadmarsh owners Westfield is part of more than £1.3bn of spending on major projects in Nottingham over the next four years.
The Broadmarsh plans will almost triple the size of the shopping centre from 400,000 sq ft to 1.1m sq ft and create around 5,000 permanent jobs. Work is expected to start next year and be completed by 2015.
Westfield's chief operating officer Peter Miller said: "We have the funds and pretty much have the confidence."
He added that Westfield was in talks with "iconic" retailers about taking a place in the new Broadmarsh. The plans include:
* Closing off Collin Street and extending the shopping centre south to Canal Street
* New Marks and Spencer and Debenhams stores to draw in shoppers, as well as a Harvey Nichols
* Moving the bus station and car park to a site south of Cliff Road
* 2,700 car parking spaces.
The redevelopment would divide the Broadmarsh into a series of blocks with open-air pedestrian routes between them.
Westfield has now agreed on the redesign with Nottingham City Council, which pushed for the more modern block-style development.Outline planning permission could be in place as early as next month.
It is hoped the latest plan will improve links between Lister Gate and Carrington Street and create a new north-south pedestrian route between Trent Street and over Canal Street to the Nottingham Contemporary art gallery.
More than £1.3bn is committed to be spent in Nottingham on major projects over the next four years.
Construction of lines two and three of the tram could begin this year, costing £500m.
The Victoria Centre is to be extended at a cost of £240m. New E.on offices are also to be built as well as a new-look train station.
Chartered surveyor Chris Sinclair said: "This is a sure sign of confidence in Nottingham from people who know what they are doing."

“This is great news and I for one can't wait for it to happen.
I agree we have heard similar stories time and again but let's be positive here.
Some people don't seem to understand that the renovations of these shopping centres are for the benefit of Nottingham residents in more ways than one. and slate any improvement ideas that are made.
If Nottingham is to recover from the recession it needs to compete with other cities and draw new businesses into the city.
Shoppers used to come from far and wide to Nottingham for the day as we had one of the best shopping experiences in the Midlands. Over the years this has declined as places such as Birmingham have taken over from us as the Midlands shopping Mecca.
Re-visiting shoppers may decide to make a day of it and spend the night in a hotel, then possibly a weekend of it to visit the tourist attractions. Overseas travellers visiting London hear what a great place Nottingham is and decide to come up and it goes on....... More tourists, more money into the city, more invested back in the city and more jobs.
More jobs may mean less people unemployed turning to drink and drugs, meaning less crime and the need to pay for increased policing, alcohol & drug drop in centres and the like. I'm not saying it's going to 'fix' Nottingham but it will go a long way into helping.
Bring it on!”

“£500 million is it?.. I wonder if Westfield might like to do something worthwhile for society & donate half the money to some of the public services that are being systematically demolished by our elected elite(coalition crew)..
They,d still have £250 million left for shiny new shop fronts all under one big posh new roof selling the same products as before..
"Do something worthwhile for society you say?".. "Is their any profit in it?"..
Say no more..”

“Goody goody, a shopping centre revamp with lots of new(?) shops selling the same products as before the revamp..
How wonderful it will be, just until the novelty wears off.. Then, move on to something else that isnt satisfactory for our throw away society..”

“About time, first impressions when you exit Nottingham train station are not good.
You have that dive looking pub on the corner with scruffy alkies outside smoking roll ups and Carrington street looks bleak and run down.
Station street from the tram bridge up needs work and also Carrington street, they both have some attractive old buildings above eye/street level but they really need a clean up and more modern street level frontage.
That scruffy pub/hotel on the corner is a real let down,it must be an ideal spot for a decent hotel with a bar/resturant/cafe open to waiting travellers.”

“This will cause on problem if they talk about M & S and Debenhams moving in to the new development
1. Empty M & S building (The main one currently occupied) - what can you do with this monstrosity of a building?
2. Empty Debenhams building - to which I suspect part of it is listed - which poses a bigger problem of what to do with it.
At present the city is nicely spread out walking from Broadmarsh past M & S to Old Mkt Square with Debenhams and then on to Vic Centre. By taking the middle out of the city shopping...it could end up being the death for certain businesses. What do the retail analysts think about it all?”

“Apologies Bus User, I assume they'll all be integrated into the new bus station (those on station street will move as well I presume). The land they're planning to move to is large enough to cope though and will be linked in with the new centre and the tram stop.”

“This has got to happen . it has been a long time coming it can only be good for this city.but i agree with other comments (where have they gone) the shops on the streets need investment too many of the same we need good quality .shops around the city centre. its be coming very unsightly.and who knows what visitors think.it needs doing before its too late.”
