TODAY we launch Nottingham's bid to become a host city for the football World Cup.

Nottingham is competing to become one of 12 cities, which the Football Association will put forward to the sport's governing body, FIFA, next year.

The Evening Post can reveal that an FA team will come to the city on July 16 to inspect facilities and plans.

Nottingham is one of 15 English cities battling to be part of the England bid for the 2018 World Cup, when it is finally submitted next year. The FA has made it clear that it will base its decision, in part, on the local support for hosting the tournament. The Post is backing the bid and asking readers to do the same. You can register your support with the FA by following the links at www.thisisnottingham.co.uk.

Hugh White, Nottingham host city bid co-ordinator, said: "This is the biggest global sporting event in the world.

''The chance to be a part of it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We have got a great offer but we need the support of Nottingham people to make our bid unique and successful."

The Nottingham team will show the FA plans for a new football stadium and sports park proposed for Holme Pierrepont or Gamston, as well as proposals for fan parks and training bases.

“Its this sort of narrow minded, petty, pathetic thinking which raises the costs to football clubs, and incurs the considerable costs. How much could be spent on additional, or better quality players if the costs of running and maintaining a ground were reduced.”

“andyman, don't be ridiculous. no way on this planet would it be a good thing if we shared a stadium with notts. it would be the worst that's ever happened to forest.”

    “Daryl:

This is why we need a multi use stadium building, building for one sport makes no financial sense when the sport is in financial crisis like so many other sports. Constructing a dedicated centre would allow both Forest and County to play there, and other sports such as rugby for example could also be played. Turning a centre over for multi use makes more financial sense, the costs are spread, more people have access, and the infrastructure can be tailored to allow easy access.

Such a centre could host athletics events, and it already has the capacity to construct the staduim and the other facilities it would need to make it a world beating centre, and the cost savings to football clubs could be spent on better players to replicate the famous histories of the clubs as well as create new ones.”

“Nottingham has no chance I am afraid. The won't be able to afford to build the stadium anyway and why would Forest or Notts fans want to go all the way out there ? The appeal at the moment is the two stadiums are walking distance from the city centre. Even if England got the world cup I doubt they would go for this plan. I think even Hull has a better chance as it has the stadium which can easily be extended and it's in the middle of a park which will ensure the media centres etc can also be accomodated.”

“Derby & Leicester fans i suggest you pipe down as nobody is interested in your tin pot 1970's style towns and dismal excuses for football clubs. You may c riise for us talking about our history but that is some thing we have in abundance, a very succesful one at that i might add too. Yet another reason why Nottingham is deserved of a World Cup hos venue. I'm afraid neither Leicester or Derby have anything to shout about either past or present.Leicester aka mumbai calling- well that is just the land that time forgot and Derby...dear oh dear what a shambolic relic, the place where the local demographic is 65+!
and most of those dine out on the free tickets that DCFC give away to claim they have a loyal fanbase of over 30,000 every week...yeah right who are you trying to kid. The fact remains that Nottingham is the city of most interest in the East Midlands with fantastic heritage and let's be honest the most succesful team in the Midlands. It's hilarious reading all the futile uneducated comments from the pikey peasant's in the sheep and crisp counties, all every comment you poorly serve up proves is the unsufferable jealousy for our great football club that you have. We may never have those glory days again but what softens that blow is the fact that neither of your joke clubs will either. Meaning you will never know what success on any front feels like - you will all have to rely on the stories from the red faithfull. Nottingham is the one of only around 3 cities anybody outside the UK has ever heard of, so i find it highly unlikely that somebody in Sau Paulo would find it appealing to travel to "Wigston" or "Alvaston" to stay to watch his nation. Unlike most i am a realist and on the subject of hosting a world cup, building a new stadia is a fatal error on all fronts. This would mean moving football futher away from the city in the long term and let's face it we will never fill a 40,000 plus seater stadium (unless we give all our tickets away like Derby) after the world cup so what is the point in playing in front of a half empty stadium every other week especially for the sake of a few D rated group stage games. It will be even tougher for Notts County if they were to move there who i bear no ill feeling towards. Why don't we just put the money towards improving the City Ground with a slight capacity increase and improve transport infrastructure and links. Surely this would be a far greater use of the money and would still prove a more than hospitable ground for other countries. We should wholly support the prospect of hosting the worlds greatest tournament but the council must nt get carried away with thoughts of grandure which could damage the long term economic status, heritage and atmospheric climates of two historic football clubs. World Cup - YES
    New Stadium - NO”

“Just read some of the comments made here today and I was ashamed to be born and bread in Nottingham. Then reading a little further I realised that the comments wern't from Nottinghams residents they were from the Pikies over the border in Direby. COME ON Nottingham, it's time to be proud and hold our heads up high and say come on England, we're ready and we want you......”
