Nottingham hoping for better forecast
NOTTINGHAM Rugby are once again sweating on Mother Nature for their re-arranged fixture with Leeds Carnegie at Meadow Lane on Sunday (3pm).
The game was called off 48 hours before it was due to be played last Sunday because of a frozen pitch and, with the temperatures remaining in the minus position, the pitch is still unplayable.
The club have planned an inspection for lunch-time today but the forecast is not good.
The Green and Whites were due to play Doncaster Knights in another re-arranged fixture this Sunday but the complete Championship league programme was wiped out last weekend and the fixtures committee decided to play them all this Sunday instead.
It means the Doncaster fixture will now be played next Wednesday night, weather permitting.
And if the Leeds game is postponed again, then the Green and Whites are going to have to play four games in a fortnight to complete their regular league campaign on time.
Nottingham's director of rugby, Glenn Delaney, is trying to put a positive slant on the backlog.
He said: "When you get the weather like this, matches just come to halt but this weather is not new for us because we've had it the last two years.
"We know how to handle it in training because of our past experiences and we are just getting on with it.
"It's later this year than it was last time which is compounding everything because all the league games need to be played by February 25.
"If the weather stays as predicted, the game might be played on Sunday, if not, then we will be going Wednesday, Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday.
"Playing four matches in a fortnight is not helpful towards preparing for the play-offs but we are not alone in it.
"I've got a good squad here and we will make good use of it but it is not the ideal preparation for the back-end of the season."
Nottingham, who are on 48 points, still need one point to be sure of their place in the play-offs and with Leeds, Doncaster and Bedford looking to better their play-off positions, and Plymouth Albion, who are at the other end of the table, trying to avoid relegation, there won't be any soft touches.
One thing is for sure, the Green and Whites won't fancy going to Bedford for their final league match still looking for that last point.
Of course, that's assuming that Moseley, who are on 33 points, get bonus point wins in their last three games.
However, that is highly unlikely as their three remaining fixtures are against Bristol away on Sunday, they entertain Bedford Blues a week tomorrow and then travel to play Pirates on February 25.
Hopefully, weather permitting, Championship leaders Bristol can do Nottingham a favour on Sunday, squashing Moseley's play-off hopes and securing the Green and Whites' place in the top eight, without them having to kick a ball.
