NOTTINGHAM has forced its way back into the top five regional shopping centres – despite the impact of the recession.

The city has bucked the trend seen in other East Midlands cities such as Derby and Leicester, which both saw falls in spending. And it overtook Leeds to become the UK's fifth favourite shopping destination outside London.

Graham Chapman, deputy leader of Nottingham City Council, said: "I'm pleasantly surprised, particularly because we're at a stage where we haven't developed the Broadmarsh Centre."

He said shoppers had gone to other cities to look at their new shopping centres and then returned to Nottingham because it was more interesting.

New figures from retail specialists CACI show that in 2009/10 the city's shops saw spending of £1.81bn. This is an increase of £450m from the previous year's figure, although CACI has changed the way it draw ups the figures, making it difficult to compare statistics on a like-for-like basis.

But other key shopping centres – such as Leeds and Bristol – have seen a drop in spending.

Jon Emmerson, partner at commercial property agents Heb, said: "Nottingham always does well in fashion, but food retailers have started coming to the centre in the last year or two – with Tesco and Waitrose opening and Sainsbury's are under offer in the city at the moment.

"The city still doesn't have the retailers it deserves. Those retailers aren't here at the moment but the partial redevelopment of the Broadmarsh Centre might attract them."

“As a city centre retailer I think the point missed is that Nottingham has a good mix of shops, not simply shopping centres with the same offer of retailers as every other city. There has still been room for independent and niche market retailers which draw people from other cities. However, with the current development plans, particularly at the Broadmarsh, the different independent offer is being pushed out in favour of the multi nationals. Keep us different to survive!!”

“It is difficult to find things you want to buy in Nottingham if you don't drive. I like to shop locally for preference, but, for example, I wanted some pond plants this week and had to order them over the web because there's nowhere in town that sells them.”

“I realy do wish i could belive the report, but over the last three years i struggle to part with money in Nottingham stores .
I love shopping for clothes and buying the occasional gift but its like the same stock i keep seeing everytime i visit a store, i dont think ive spent more than £50 in the last three years on anything in the town centre .
Internet shopping is where all the exclusive garments are and you dont have to worry about getting for ticket for whatever contravention the council seem to have a problem with.
The only problem with internet shopping is theres always something else you want to buy from it, i keep having to remind the wife also, that not only can she buy from the thing but she can also sell, but no she's not tried that option yet, i wish .”

“So everything isn't actually quite as depressing as many on here wish it was. Awww, diddums, and UK growth also exceed expectations, so can't even moan about that.

There must be some depressing news out there that the doom-n-gloom'ers on here can take comfort in and maybe make their own lives seem slightly less depressing by comparison?”
