Nottingham Post comment: Pressure vital on A453 work
KEEPING up the pressure is vital as the Government moves closer to a decision on whether to bring forward the A453 widening project.
Following last autumn's Comprehensive Spending Review, the £164m scheme was put on hold along with 13 other schemes across the country until at least 2015, after the next General Election.
But since then the Department for Transport has indicated it would like to identify a small number of 'reserve' schemes where construction could potentially start earlier if circumstances allowed.
Recognising the importance of the scheme, Notts County Council stepped in with an offer of £20 million towards the costs, to encourage the Government to give it early approval.
We recently reported how the road is now the most congested in the country at average peak times, and now new figures show how it continues to be an extremely dangerous one, with three fatal, 15 serious and 87 minor injury accidents between 2007-09.
The county council believes a decision could be due in the near future so it is important that everyone does their bit now to let the Government know that widening the A453 would be the right choice, offering great value for money by saving lives and providing a massive boost to the regional economy.

“Now then, ktebailey01. Exactly where is this new tram line that is going to run "alongside the existing rail line"?
I am familiar with the proposals for NET Phase 2, but neither of those routes will run alongside an existing rail line.
Perhaps you are confused.”

“I thought the plans include modifying the junctions and not just adding an extra lane between them. If implemented properly the bottlenecks should be eliminated.”

“What amazes me is we can find millions for a new tramline to run alongside the existing trainline but we can't find the money to solve the death road issue. Well worth the extra council tax!”

“ian_bridgford. Like Dooglepip says in his post, when the road is dualled there won't be a hold up when you reach clifton as it will join up with the A52. I can't understand what is confusing you. Dual carriageway when you come of the motorway, through clifton, joining up with the A52 and along the ring road. From a single carriageway to a dual carriageway. Now do you understand ?”

“the problem isn't joining the A453 from either the M1 or Clifton, it's the massive traffic jams when you reach J24 from the A453 or reach Clifton coming from the direction of the M1”
