FOREST supporters are planning a memorial event to commemorate the life of club owner Nigel Doughty.

The Nottingham Forest Supporters' Group said they would be meeting on March 1 to discuss what form the memorial would take.

Group spokeswoman Rita Kirk, of Bladon Road, Ruddington, said: "A memorial event is something we are keen on progressing and it is our intention to hold one.

"Obviously we will wait to get the backing of the family, but it will be something we discuss at our next committee meeting."

Yesterday more tributes, from across the political divide, poured in for the man who saved Forest from administration in 1999, and pumped millions of pounds into the Labour Party.

Justice Secretary and Rushcliffe MP Ken Clarke, said: "Nottingham Forest owes a great debt of gratitude to Nigel Doughty, who saved the club when he bought it and put a great deal of effort and money into putting it back into better times. He was a very nice man and a brilliant financial entrepreneur.

"Every fan of the club will mourn for his sad, early loss."

Patrick Mercer, the Conservative MP for Newark, the constituency where Mr Doughty was born, said: "I think Nigel made a huge contribution to the whole of the county, and all of his endeavours were very successful.

"He will be very much missed from Notts and he will always be a son of Newark.

"The endoscopy centre in Newark Hospital was one of his great contributions to the town, and one we will not forget."

One of Mr Doughty's other great achievements was investing £3m in creating the Doughty Centre of Corporate Responsibility at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire.

Professor Frank Horwitz, director of the Cranfield School of Management, said: "We are deeply saddened and shocked at the sudden passing of Nigel.

"He was an incredibly kind, generous man with a deep desire to make the world a better place.

"Nigel completed his Cranfield MBA in 1984, and since then has been a wonderful supporter of the institution.

"His support, sound advice and deep passion for Cranfield will be sorely missed and remembered. We wish his family strength and courage in mourning their tragic loss."

“As a small tribute on Saturday.........why don't we have a minute of chanting 'Nigel Doughty's Red 'n' White Army' during the minute's applause................

The man will be sorely missed by his beloved Forest, not to mention all the charities he supported, although I am sure this will be continued by his family. I for one am very grateful for everything he did for the team I love. Let's get behind the boy's on Saturday and help them grab those much needed 3 points, it is what Nigel would have wanted.........”

“tHE PLAYERS SHOULD ALL WEAR TOPS IN THE WARM-UP MAYBE WITH JUST A SIMPLE MESSAGE - "THANK YOU NIGEL". I STILL CAN'T GET OVER IT. LIFE IS CRUEL. BUT THE GREATEST TRIBUTE THAT THE PLAYERS COULD MAKE TO NIGEL IS TO EXERT EVERY LAST BIT OF EFFORT AND ABILITY TO AVOID RELEGATION. WE CAN STILL DO IT -IT'S 3 FROM THE CURRENT BOTTOM 5 IMO - WE HAVE TO AVOID RELEGATION - OTHERWISE IT WOULD BE A SLIGHT SULLYING OF NIGEL'S NAME AND ALL HE DID FOR THE CLUB.”

“Nigel Doughty's work for local charities alone is something I'm sure he and his family are very proud of. I heard a guy by the name of Pete who had phoned in to the BBC Radio Nottingham Match Talk show last night suggesting that it would be a good thing for a football match to be played every year between Forest and Notts County for charity. The suggestion went down very well with the presenters of the show and I certainly hope that the idea becomes reality. It would be nice to perhaps have a trophy to commemorate the game named The Nigel Doughty Charity Trophy/Shield. The youth academy at Forest is second to none thanks to Nigel, who has championed its development since becoming the clubs owner. I have heard many suggestions that it should be named after him and feel this too would be very appropriate and worthy of the man.”

“A couple of ideas for the club. With the permission of the current shirt sponsor, have one game where the shirts are sponsored by one of Nigel Doughty's charities, Childline, NSPCC etc. These shirts could then be auctioned off and raise rather a lot of money.

Also, on Saturday, the team could run out with shirts that just have Doughty's name on the back. Some FA ruling will say they can't play the game with the shirts on but I think that would show just what he meant to them as well as to the rest of us.”
