NOTTINGHAM Forest are still on course to achieve their objectives this season, believes Simon Gillett.

The midfielder feels the club are well placed to challenge for a top six finish in the Championship – if they can make gradual improvements over the coming months.

Sean O'Driscoll's side remain three points of the play-off places ahead of tomorrow's trip to fellow promotion hopefuls Watford.

And, while Gillett says there is still room for improvement, Forest are also still on course to achieve their objectives this season.

"I am always wary of making comparisons between where we are and where we want to be," he said.

"But we are on target, we are in touch with the play-offs. Things do not come good overnight.

"You look at the clubs who have tried to achieve overnight success and it hasn't worked.

"We are trying to build something. We have a lot of new players and we have done well.

"I am quietly optimistic that we can continue to build on what we have done so far.

"We are trying to play the way the manager wants us to play, because we believe that will give us the best chance of winning games.

"We are not doing too badly, we are a few points off the play-offs, things are tight, but we will be there at the end of the season."

Only seven points divide the teams in sixth and 17th places in the Championship table.

And Gillett said: "There are a lot of teams who think they can get promoted.

"At least half of the Championship will believe that.

"There are only three or four clubs in this division who have not been in the Championship at some point.

"There are a lot of clubs with financial backers who are supporting their efforts to get into the Premier League.

"We are trying to make sure our name is among those. We are doing our best to get there."
