ALEX McLeish's future as Nottingham Forest manager still hangs in the balance.

The Scot took training as normal yesterday, before holding lengthy talks with the club's owners, as he demanded answers over a frustrating deadline day that was capped off by the collapse of George Boyd's transfer to the City Ground.

McLeish spent close to two hours in talks with chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi and the duo did discuss a plan for the future, including potential transfer targets.

But while rumours that he had already resigned over the issue – which saw the Forest hierarchy pull the plug on the move after the player allegedly failed an eye test on Thursday – were unfounded, it is understood that McLeish remains uncertain about his future.

McLeish will put himself in the firing line when he takes charge of Forest when they take on his former club Birmingham at St Andrew's today. But it could yet still prove to be his final game in charge, if the events of the last few days do prove to be a turning point.

As well as the dramatic collapse of the move to sign Boyd, Forest failed in their efforts to sign Wolves defender Stephen Ward and winger Chris Burke from Birmingham City, with bids for both players rejected.

And, as a result, McLeish's hopes of three new signings on Thursday were dashed as Forest failed to make a single further addition.

The club have added Gonzalo Jara and Elliott Ward on loan until the end of the season and Darius Henderson on a short-term deal, to take the number of new additions this season to 18. But McLeish had hoped for longer-term signings.

The manager publicly played down rumours of a row with the club's hierarchy last week. But there have been disagreements over the club's transfer policy.

And the Al Hasawi family, who issued a statement through chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi last night, could yet find themselves looking to appoint the club's FOURTH manager since they took over in July, following the immediate dismissal of Steve Cotterill and the Boxing Day sacking of Sean O'Driscoll.

Forest legend Garry Birtles says he would not have blamed McLeish had he chosen to walk away from the club already and he warns that, if McLeish is to have a future at the City Ground, he must be allowed to manage the club on his terms.

"Alex is an experienced manager, he has worked under Alex Ferguson, one of the best," said Birtles. "If you want him to manage the club, let him do it how he feels best."

“To my mind our owners do not fully understand football. Even is sacking O'Driscoll had been justifiable it was imperative to replace him with a manager who embraced the same football values if they were to continue the progress made. Instead they appointed a man with totally opposite beliefs on how the game should be played. Our squad is tailored to playing cultured football. It had to be a purist who replaced O'Driscoll and it wasn't. Anybody with half a football brain would have realised this. What the owners were effectively signing up to was a total rebuilding of the squad to match the new requirements which they clearly are unprepared to do. So, as I say, Forest have naive, incompetent owners.”

“Ohio, yep I watch on BEIN, also on First Row sports on the web.
Jilly, although I always made it a point to thank ND for his financial input, I was also critical of his handling of the club in the latter days of his tenure, however, to be fair, ND had what was it, 12 years or so, these guys have only had a few months you have to give them time surely.”

    “Possibility one.

The Al Hazawi's have £800 million in the bank. They brought the club for big money. They've spent close to £10 million in transfer fees, wages and loan fee's since they arrived. They always wanted AMc, but he turned us down in the summer, having had a torrid time with Villa. In December, AMc declared he was ready for work again, and Fawaz promptly sacked SoD and appointed him, believing he was a better manager. AMc didn't know the squad, so purchasing in the January window was inevitably delayed. After 2 weeks however, Fawaz acts and sacks the chief scout for failing to identify the right players, and the CFO as his approach to buying players was remarkably tight. The manager then identifies 3 primary targets. We lose 1 as his wage demands are two high, 1 as Birmingham refuse to sell at the right price and 1 due to failing a medical. AMc is furious that the extra funds for Burke were not released and the chairman overruled him on Boyd; but Fawaz refuses to be held to ransom because of his wealth.

Conclusion: Lessons learned, the summer will see the club make the right buys with AMc now understanding the needs of the club and having time to identify a list of realistic targets, unhampered by a club structure that was proving more of a hindrance than a help. Forest reach at least the play offs in 2014.

    Possibility two.

Fawaz isn't that rich. He didn't realise what an expensive business English football is. The money's run out. The trolls are right. Fawaz expects promotion on the back of loanee's. He wants to manage the club himself. We're finished until he sells up to someone richer. He deliberately scuppered the Boyd transfer as he wasn't prepared to pay the fee. He refused to pay £750,000 for Burke as he couldn't afford it. We're done for.

So. Which theory is the correct one? Well, before we lose all hope at the hands of the trolls, here are a few questions.

Why pay £2 million for Cox if money is so tight? Why pay £2 million for bloomin' scoreboards if money is so tight? Why sack a manager and have to pay off his contract when no-one expected him to? Why pay out for three quarters of a squad, then refuse to fill the gaps? Why pay £1 million for Geurdioura when we already had central midfielders if money was tight?

All of these things indicate that these guys do have the money! Even with the trolls and the haters leaping for joy and rubbing their hands with glee, lets not give up hope just yet! if there are no more signings by mid summer, then, and only then, will i concede that we're in trouble! Hopefully, lessons have been learned. Once again, we'll just have to wait and see...”

Championship games are shown on the Bein (Be in) network, dish satellite ch 408. The Leeds/Cardiff was the featured game yesterday. Forest v Wolves and the wooley backs have also been featured. As my user name suggests, I have lived in Ohio for about 16 years.

You echo my thoughts exactly. I too spent many years in Middle East. I, like you, know the way it is. But try telling that to the FTID, KTF, COYR crowd. They just don't see it. But they will eventually.

Oh and Short Legs - not so. If the Al Hasawi's walk (and one day they will; and I for one hope it is tomorrow), Forest will survive.”

“Hawasis aren't related to oil or royal family, so they may have money but not big money. Hence the reason we see loanees and freebies, don't forget the loanees have to go back and then what are we left with.
I live out here, and Kuwait is same size as a city n UK, so the say the own a club means they own a club like Retford or West Brigdford..
It's all ego, I keep saying that, we are a toy, I be the paid next to nothing for us, if they were serious then money would have been spent, I will keep an eye out for the next Kuwaiti transfer but I know one is already planned to arrive end of the season..”
