Nottingham East shortlist announced
THREE local candidates have been included on Labour's shortlist of nine to fight the Nottingham East seat at the General Election.
They are city council leader Coun Jon Collins, Coun Brian Parbutt and Coun Jane Urquhart.
The party's ruling body, the National Executive Committee, yesterday approved the names, ahead of interviews on Wednesday. In a controversial move, it will choose the winning candidate.
John Heppell, who has held the seat since 1992, is standing down. His wife is being treated for breast cancer.
One of the national candidates, former minister and ally of Gordon Brown Chris Leslie, has been tipped as the most likely winner.
Yesterday, local Labour Party members, councillors from Nottingham East and John Heppell met NEC representatives in Birmingham.

“r. derby,
I was just asking why they have named four on the list and not the other five. Do they think we have a short attention spa¿¿. Now, what was I writing about?”

“The only tedious morons on this site are people like you, r, derby.
Keep your opinions about Nottingham to yourself and sort your own city out before coming on here with your pontificating drivel.”

“Mr. S. When you say it is nice to see some local candidates, do you honestly think that Jon is "nice"? I honestly don't know who I can vote for at the moment, But I do know it would not be that self-important and dictatorial Collins. This man is a bully.”

“"If you feel so strongly, join the party and fight to change things."
I would sooner drill holes into my forehead and poke chopsticks in than join the Liebour Party. The party of liars and crooks.”

“Ted, Notts; the selection of Labour candidates is a Party matter as is the selection of all the other partie's candidates. Are we ever privy to the process in any other party? Didn't think so. However I do agree local people should be on the list but I want the best person standing and not just a time-server or a mate of the committee. If you feel so strongly, join the party and fight to change things. If you are not a member you get one vote to voice your disapproval, just like the rest of us.”

“It is probably known that, if the decision were left to the constituency party, it would be a shoo-in for John Collins. Members of the National Executive have probably got wind of the fact that he carries a lot of baggage locally. It would be far better to have a loyal party man with no local connections to confuse matters. It must be noted, however, that Leslie lost the Shipley seat (and a majority of 2,500) in 2005 to the Tories.”
