UP to 1,440 staff at Nottingham City Council were today learning of proposed pay cuts.

Eight thousand council officers were being informed of proposed changes to their pay and terms and conditions to bring the council in line with new national equal pay legislation.

The proposed changes – which could see individuals' pay increasing, decreasing or remaining the same – will now be discussed with three recognised trade unions Unison, GMB and Unite.

A ballot will be taken to see if union members agree with the proposed changes.

Nottingham City Council chief executive Jane Todd said: "I am confident that by updating them and eliminating inconsistencies and inequalities, we are offering employees a very good package overall and hope that trade union members and other staff will agree.

"I know that these proposed changes have caused anxiety amongst staff and we have done everything possible to communicate with and support colleagues.

"The majority of staff will find that their pay will increase or remain the same.

"For the minority who face the prospect of losing pay, we have introduced a policy which will protect an individual's pay for three years after the changes are implemented."

“I am one of the people who has been told I will lose money. I have worked very hard beyond my grade to prop up those who earn £65000+ and now will lose £4000. This is unfair I worked extremely hard because I care about the city but to no avail. The whole system seem unfair it seems people on a certain grade were guarnateed they will go down. It is strange how we can find money for mangement to carry on getting extortionate pay rises and no one their seems to ever have a py cut even though they are highly incompetent!!! People like myself will no longer work hard and act like management, sit and chat all day!!”

“what about sacking all of those who get paid more than £30,000 a year then they could cut the council tax in half!”

“Why make them all self employed? Then we could just pay them when we need them. Theres to much burcrates in councils.”

“I am an employee who received their 'new' grade today, and I think some of the people commenting here need to know that it is not just council employees in the various offices around the city that are affected by this but many school based staff working directly with children (Teaching Assistants) and in the admin and Behaviour management areas. These are all hard working dedicated staff who are being told they are no longer worth the wage they were on but a much lower one because someone , somewhere, looked at a piece of paper (non of them have been interviewed personally) and decided that¿s what they were worth. Some, mainly the less experienced and qualified staff, seem to have gained because this assimilation looks at what job you are doing at the moment and makes no mention of past service or qualifications gained. It is incredibly sad that experienced, dedicated employees are being treated in this way and can only lead to a demoralized staff. Is that what the council wants for the children being educated in their care?”

“Andy -Your writings are long but unintelligent. If you assume that the world has an infinite state then the empirirical principles of a council state or employees are of a scendental illiusion. The misunderstanding e.g anthitchetic is transcendental.”

“It wouldn't be a great idea to cut back on public spending while there are muddled and ill-educated people like the writer from 'Heaven' (see below) out there. If Unison were such a powerful Trade 'Onion' (sic) these cuts wouldn't be happening. I have no idea which council employees are effective and which are not; I have no idea whose role is essential and whose is less vital. And neither do most of the people responding to this item. It hasn't stopped some of them relishing other people's misfortune though, has it? And, by the way, these cuts mean council workers will have less to spend on small businesses in the private sector - and in the present climate that is bad news for all of us. I run a small business and I too pay tax. Personally, I'd like to live in a region with good public services and a good local economy. For what it's worth, I agree with those who have slammed the consultant (Jane Todd) standing in for the Chief Executive for her glib and nasty remarks.”

“They could replace most of the Council employees with a simple phone system ...

Press 1 for "that's nothing to do with us"

Press 2 for "there's nothing we can do about that"

How on earth have the City Council doubled our tax in ten years with no discernible improvement in services ?”

“Those having in-depth knowledge of City Council will know Ms Jane Todd (a previous council planning officer) was a political appointment.

The Council has many inefficient employees, mainly senior management caring for their cushy well-paid jobs.”

“This initiative comes from Whitehall, and its execution is local.....Also, such policy is applicable to all grades, including Management and Executives......... Those who voted them into power, now suffer the consequences of their actions !. Remember, next time you vote, BE CAREFUL JUST WHERE YOU PUT THE CROSS !!.”
