NOTTINGHAM City Council says it will cost £6 million to implement £12 million of cuts.

From April the Government is scrapping council tax benefit and instead all councils will have to introduce a support system of their own.

  1. Money

The council has said it will cut £12m from council tax support over the next two years. But it has estimated that to set up new arrangements and run the new scheme for two years, will cost £6.2m.

Deputy leader Councillor Graham Chapman said: "These Government welfare reforms are going to have a devastating impact. Not only that, their introduction is costing council tax payers £6.2m to inflict £12m cuts.

"That's due to things like having to collect small amounts of money from more people, bringing extra administrative costs, the need for new computer software, and hiring more staff such as rent collectors and bailiffs."

“Chapman needs to get a life, if it costs £6.2 m to dispose of £12m cuts then the council need to look at there extravagant overheads. It is a good excuse to employ more public servants on big salaries to do the job, why not ask the hard working current staff to do a bit more and cover any additional costs internally.

In the private sector this is what would be done to overcome the problem, Councillor Chapman needs to go into the private sector and see how to be efficient at work.”

“Examples of extravagance could start with the council's propaganda sheet (aka "The Arrow") or all the money spent on other self gratifying nonsense like plastering the city's advertising hoardings and bin lorries with how "proud" the council is is of itself and how "ambitious" it is to run the city into the ground with ludicrous initiatives like the the WPL and evening/Sunday parking charges and whinging on about how Windsor is run instead of looking closer to home for a few inconvenient truths. Need I go on? I don't think so.”

“Usual sort of stupid comment - can anyone give examples of the so called extravagance? or explain how asking companies once a year for a payment for car parking spaces is the same as asking thousands of individuals for £3 a week which everyone knows they probably haven't got?

Of course it's going to cost a lot more to bill these people and collect relatively small amounts of money. Arrears will also inevitably be higher and likely to have to be written off as uncollectable. You can't get money out of people who simply don't have it and it's unlikely that the threat of sending people to jail is going to make much difference as we won't have enough space in our prisons.

But of course, common sense and reasoned judgement doesn't mean much to most of the commentators on here.....”

“Chapman wasn't bothered about extra administrative costs to businesses when he and his cohorts forced the WPL onto them.

You can dish it out Chapman, but like all bullies you don't like taking it!”

“Given the level of waste, extravagance and incompetence generally exhibited by Nottingham City Council, I expect it normally costs them (i.e. us) about £6M just to change a light bulb so maybe we're getting relatively good value on this one.”

“i guess most of the costs will be from meetings, why not amalgamate with other councils ?,you reckoned it saved you money last time (although council tax still went up).”

“If the headline is true, which I seriously doubt, then those working at the City Council are at best utterly incompetent.”

“This government is doing my nut in. We, the people, need to ditch them at the next general election and vote Labour into power again.

Any economist worth his salt will tell you that borrowing vast sums of money from the likes of China and leaving it for future generations to pay back, is a far more sensible approach than attempting to balance the books now! IT'S JUST CRAZY AND I'M SICK OF IT!!!

FYI I've declared myself bankrupt twice and never paid back a penny. Why? Because that's how I roll! Deal with it!

    ARE YOU LISTENING CAMERON!!! !”
