Nigel Kennedy, Royal Concert Hall, by Sue Crawford
THIS was a rescheduled sell-out concert that consisted of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons played back to back with Kennedy's brand new composition, The Four Elements.
Both were presented by the violin virtuoso with The Nigel Kennedy Band, The Orchestra of Life and a vocal quartet.
For 25 years he has been bringing a new perspective to classical favourites and here, Kennedy and his young orchestra and Polish jazz quintet gave Vivaldi's well loved classic a new interpretation that had both verve and excitement.
The early influence of Stephane Grappelli was still evident, as was his collaborations with Sharon Sharron and Fats Waller, to name a few.
This wasn't a concert for the classical purist but for the lover of crossover genres. Kennedy and co. fused electro and prog-rock with traditional pieces, although a highlight was a beautiful, impromptu Bach interlude for violin and cello.
The Four Elements was another high velocity performance by The Orchestra of Life but with much more high octane choral work.
This was a concert full of contrasts and surprises, delivered with energy and passion.
It is easy to see why Kennedy is a record-breaker when it comes to classical violinist album sales.
Four encores and a standing ovation were a testament to his continuing ability to take the instrument and classical music to new places with aplomb.
