THE former RAF Newton site has been 'eliminated' from the Government's list of eco-towns, it has been confirmed.

The four successful bids announced in the House of Commons this morning were for Whitehill-Bordon, in Hampshire; China Clay Community, in St Austell, Cornwall; North Bicester, in Oxfordshire; and Rackheath, in Norwich.

Housing Minister John Healey said he wanted to see a further six eco-town sites in a 'second wave' and up to £5m is available for councils to conduct further planning work on proposals.

But a spokesman for the Department of Communities and Local Government has confirmed that Newton is not being considered for the second wave.

He said: "They don't have our support, we've eliminated them from the process."

The sites for the second wave will not be identified before 2010.

The Government still says up to 10 eco-town developments will be built or well under way by 2020.

The former RAF Newton site, near Bingham, was on a list of 11 possible locations nationally for eco-towns, with up to 6,000 homes proposed.

Peter Savage, of action group No2Newton, which has been campaigning against changes, said: "It's not justified in terms of housing need, or Rushcliffe planning policies, or in terms of the Government's own selection site criteria.

"It's simply the wrong thing in the wrong place. It's not only Rushcliffe against it: the county is against it, virtually all the residents are against it – and the local MP is against it."

    “Andyman

Newton is already an industrial estate mate with trucks going in and out all day much to the annoyance of the residents I have heard.......

Even heard of some of the saddo's going out taking pics of trucks going into the industrial estate.......

    Jesus, get a life..........!!!!!

They dont moan when the industrial estate gives them employment and prospects, but jesus, they are up in arms about the increase in traffic......!!!!

    Makes me laugh......

Too much time on their hands I think, it must be true when they say that old people have trouble filling their time......

    lol”

General Election is on the Horizon and the Local MP is Ken Clarke. He loves the idea of further integration with the European Union.

Open borders grid locked roads Post Office closures etc etc etc and Rushcliffe residents keep voting him in.Ughhh!!”

“This raises another issue, what ia Newton going to be used for now, perhaps an industrial estate, or even an immigration centre disguised as Government buildings.”

    “Stupid Ocham name,

I¿ve read the ¿Big Book of Liberal Chants¿ and I found it unconvincing. You¿ve probably got the pop-up picture version which is much more fun.”
