Newell calls for focus as treble-chasing Notts enter crucial period
AS Notts completed their T20 quarter-final victory over Sussex Sharks, the face of skipper David Hussey and the rest of his players were wreathed in smiles.
Up in the changing room, too, the home side took time to celebrate their success of reaching finals day at the Rose Bowl with a beer or two – and why not?

But with Notts in such an unrivalled position this season, there is an acknowledgement that the slaps on the back following any successes cannot go on for too long.
Director of cricket Mick Newell's side are the envy of the rest of the counties in that they are the only one who still, realistically, have a shot of winning all three trophies.
Monday's triumph sees Notts have a one in four chance of winning their first one-day prize since 1991 at the Rose Bowl on August 14.
In the CB 40, they have won four out of their last five matches to sit second in their Group C table behind Warwickshire but with a game in hand.
And in County Championship Division One, Newell's bread and butter, they are bookies' favourites for a first title since 2005, lying second behind Yorkshire but with two games in hand.
With so much at stake on three separate fronts, concentration is paramount.
That will firstly be directed towards their Championship clash against Somerset at Taunton, which starts today.
"August is a really important month in defining the season so I don't think we will have any issues in focusing on any games," said Newell.
"It's great to be in a position where we are still challenging in all three competitions. It means that every game we have between now and the end of the season matters.
"It's nice to put the T20 competition and CB 40 aside for a while and concentrate on two important four-day matches.
"By the end of August we could have one trophy in the bag and be in a good position in the others or we could have lost out on one and be up against it in the others.
"So this is a key time, but we have to remember we are a fair way off winning anything yet."
Notts have already beaten Somerset in four-day cricket this season, Stuart Broad's eight wickets in the match helping Notts to a narrow two-wicket victory at Trent Bridge in April.
Newell is anticipating the mid-table hosts will put up just as good a fight if not more so on a ground they know well."
He said: "A lot of their players, James Hildreth among them, play better at Taunton when the ball is not seaming around quite so much.
"Marcus Trescothick is obviously a very high-quality player and you have to get him out twice without him getting too many if you are going to win the game.
"He got 20-odd and 90-odd in the game at Trent Bridge, which was not his best return, but we will obviously be out to dismiss him even more cheaply.
"Peter Trego is a player who seems to come into his own against Notts as an aggressive batsman and someone who swings the ball."
Last time out, Notts cruised to a ten wicket victory at Warwickshire where Broad and Mark Wagh starred.
It was a welcome return to winning ways after the side had failed to prevail since coming out on top in the first four matches of their campaign.
"Before Warwickshire, we had gone four matches without a win over a long period of time because of the way the fixtures had been arranged, so it came at a good time," said Newell.
"It's also important to win when your best players are available (Broad, Swann and Sidebottom all featured) and they made a massive contribution.
"It has allowed us to keep the pressure on (leaders) Yorkshire and the good thing is all the rest of the sides drew.
"We won't be able to call on Swanny and Broady this time, but the likes of Paul Franks missed out at Edgbaston and he has been terrific all season and was very unlucky to miss out anyway."
Taunton has traditionally been a graveyard for bowlers of all types.
But Newell is expecting things to be harder for the batsman this time, especially against the spin of Murali Kartik.
He said: "I would be surprised if it is a high-scoring game. They will be desperate to win and have produced wickets that has aided their left-arm spinner.
"We will take Graeme White and if it does look like it will take spin, we could play him."
Although overseas batsman David Hussey has yet to fire in four-day cricket, Newell does not doubt the Australian will come good.
"We all know Huss is a top-quality player and he has only had three knocks," he said. "He didn't get any at Warwickshire, but that can happen to anyone and it's not an issue for him or us."
Notts squad: Hales, Patel, Wagh, Hussey, Mullaney, Brown, Read, Franks, Adams, Sidebottom, Pattinson, Shreck, White.
