National health conference held in Nottingham
A NATIONAL conference on Vulnerability in Health will be held in Nottingham.
Medsin-Nottingham, the local branch of a national network of students with an interest in health, will host well-renowned speakers in their field and over 400 student delegates from across the UK.
It will be held at the University of Nottingham Medical School, Queen's Medical Centre campus, this weekend.
Subjects to be discussed include physical disability, asylum seekers, mental health and the elderly.
The group's campaign, "Are we on target?" will also see students dress up as Robin Hood with his bow and arrow to question whether international humanitarian goals such as the United Nations led initiative to end poverty by 2015 will be met.
Three Nottingham prospective parliamentary candidates have confirmed they will attend, from the Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative parties.
Joy Troko, a medical student from Nottingham will be there to question the parliamentary candidates on asylum seeker issues.
She said: "I live in Radford, where most Nottingham asylum seekers are located. Later on as a health professional, I will identify them by their lack of National Insurance number or rejected appeal status.
"This is a form of institutional discrimination. Something of this calibre should be unacceptable given our government's belief that the UK is a standard of 'social equality', it is not. I am looking forward to the parliamentary candidates' responses."
