MYSTERY surrounds how hundreds of feathers appeared by the side of a canal in Long Eaton over the weekend.

Wendy Harrison, who regularly walks by the water next to Tamworth Road, fears they have come from three swans which live on the canal.

Wendy, 74, of Fairlea Close, Long Eaton, said: "I was walking into town to do some shopping when I saw all the feathers. Nearby there were piles of corn and I think they have been tempted out and then it seems they have been plucked right there. I'm fairly certain they were swan feathers as some were brown and white, the same colour as the young swan."

Borough councillor Roland Hosker feared the swans had been eaten. "It is hard to believe that someone has had them for dinner. Families' finances are not good and if it is leading to this, then it's awful."

“Thanks Earl, so in an effort to raise him/herself above the proletariat, vox has plumbed the depths of the gutter to inform us of his/her higher intellect?
A clever insult is of course far better than a guttural one.”

    “copperjohn3

I think that the delightful voxpopuli is saying

"how long will you try our patience, mother-f*****

My Latin's not very good but I think it just shows that you get abusive people in all walks of life. Strangely enough, voxpopuli is using a little education to make himself appear very unpleasant indeed.”

“I don't think its right to eat animals full stop, but if I did eat meat and fish I'd sooner eat a free range swan or fish than its factory farmed, drug pumped battery cousins. I'd suggest that the peasant stock are actually more educated than bigoted idiots such as vox asinus foramen likes to think.”

“Maybe royal pantries are running short of peacock??

It is a little odd that we accept the notion of the nobility tucking into swan without giving it a second thought, but the thought of the common man, wherever his place of origin, poaching a couple should be considered morally offensive.
We do have representatives of cultures within our diverse communities who are more accustomed to hunting and foraging than visiting supermarkets or market stalls for their dietary requirements.”
