A MOTHER and son have defied the odds to each win a place on Trafalgar Square's fourth plinth in an innovative art display.

Yvette and David Price-Mear, from Mansfield-Woodhouse, are taking part in sculptor Antony Gormley's One & Other installation.

Artists, political protesters and others all tried get on the usually empty plinth for one hour and express themselves.

More than 15,500 people applied for just 2,400 places in July, with only 41 chosen from the East Midlands.

So Yvette and David were astonished to be picked separately to appear, in stints eight days apart.

Full-time volunteer Yvette, 40, will use her hour on the plinth to promote her website yvettesbook.com and the Pet Bereavement Support Group she runs.

She plans to place 200 plastic ducks around her feet and take to the plinth with a hook-a-duck and a stick from 4-5pm on July 19.

On July 27, between 7pm and 8pm, son David will dress up as Joker, from Batman movie The Dark Knight, and play on his bass guitar.

A friend of the 20-year-old will film his efforts for a separate project.

Yvette – who suffers from vertigo and will have to remain seated – plans to sell the ducks afterwards.

She said: "I am very excited about it – I watched it between 9am and 1pm on television on the first day to see what people were doing.

"It is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. We have been so fortunate.

"A lot of people are up there at three in the morning, when no-one can see them – it will be great for David to be there in the afternoon.

"For two people from the same family to be on there is incredible odds."

David, who starts a degree at the University of Creative Arts in Surrey in September, said he was looking forward to his hour in the spotlight.

He said: "My two biggest loves in life are films and music; by doing this I am combining the two.

"I am very excited about doing it. There are all these people going up and doing what they want to do."

One & Other – which opened in central London on Monday – will continue for 100 days.

Its creator Antony Gormley is best known for the Angel of the North, the 20m figure overlooking the A1, near Newcastle.

Other members of Yvette and David's family have applied to take part during September but have not heard if they have been successful.
