Mosque plan in appeal process

PLANS to build a mosque in West Bridgford could be moving a step closer.

A planning application was originally submitted for a two-storey building and car park near Rushcliffe Veterinary Centre in Collington Way behind Asda, in April last year.

Neighbours were consulted but planning permission was refused in June. An appeal was then lodged in December and a public meeting was recently held at Rushcliffe Borough Council's Civic Centre.

It will now take four to five weeks for officials at the Planning Inspectorate to make a decision on the appeal.

Mike Wood from ADDC Architects, who submitted the plans on behalf of Mohammed Malik, said the public meeting had been "a good community building exercise."

The Post previously reported how some residents were worried the mosque would create traffic problems and unnecessary noise. A petition against the original application was signed by 100 objectors.

In the planning decision notice it stated that permission was refused on the grounds the mosque was "likely to result in additional traffic, noise and disturbance for extensive periods of the day."

Mr Malik, of Loughborough Road, put in the application so Muslims in West Bridgford would have somewhere bigger to meet.

“Sorry English it won't be pink , the plans show bright blue.
the word on the street is that the money for this building is coming from Pakistan. What does that tell us. Mr Malik says only 8 people will use it, then why build it? The local Vet was refused permission to extend his car park onto the same plot of land that was refused, why?
Mr Malik also says that it will be used for education, what education? I saw enough of the Dispatches programme to answer that. I am extremely worried about this”

    “The hard line facts are:

There is a shortage of green belt land in this country to be kept said way.

We are relatively overpopluated compared to the rest of the world.

Finally, why build something that only serves a very tiny portion of the community within walking distance of said site?”

“Sorry King Biffo but these questions needed asking! Are they paying for it? As for a different culture what do you mean. Even the Labour government have accepted that that multi-culturalism has failed and divided communities. I am fed of of so called moderate mosques preaching hatred and i do not want to see one rise up here. It is all very well dismiss these arguments as racist but this has what has occurred in area's all over the country. It encourages division and I do not support this.”

“This story, as reported, does not reflect the truth in this case. I suspect it was instigated by the very people trying to destroy my environment with this appalling idea. This man saw a lovely piece of land and decided to build on it, removing it from its present community use. He doesn¿t own it nor live particularly near it, nor does he care that almost every resident on this small quite cul-de-sac is against any building taking place. He believes he has a 'right' to build this because it¿s what he wants! Every car that comes down this road would have to turn around outside our home - how safe is that? He was refused planning as his plan is against Rushcliffe development plan. So he appealed higher up. We can only hope and pray that the inspector who is making the decision can see the utter inappropriateness of building anything like this on this land and in this position. And King Biffo - I think you'll find the Meadows one is A MILE away from here - not Miles away! But then you don't live on my street so you probably wouldn't know or care.”
