Market Square Camp
I was dismayed yesterday to see an area of the Market Square sectioned off and occupied as a camp. The folk within the camp are supposedly exercising their democratic right to protest. in this instance they are protesting, i think, about the current economic crisis. I have a number of issues which nobody seems to want to address:-
1. Has anybody in Authority considered my and the rest of Nottingham 's right to enjoy the Market Square and not to have it looking like a squatter camp?
2. If i lit a fire in the Market square i would surely get arrested.
3. Where are these squatters getting their money from? If its the Social security surely they should be asking them if they are available to work, withdrawing their housing entitlement, heating allowances etc. They clearly aren't using them.
4. If Nottingham Forests next opponents supporters decided to pitch their tents in the Market Square would the police allow it?
Please lets stop pandering to the tiny minority that wants to get something for nothing. Can we redress the balance so that the vast majority of hard working people have a voice. These squatters can make a nuisance of themelves because thats all they do! if they want to do nothing the State should give them nothing.
yours Disgruntled

“Ohh dear I made a very bad financial transaction. I should be OK though, I'm going to tell the Government to bail me out and you tax payers are the one's who are going to do that, because with your obedience and stupidity I can get what is owed to me (from you tax payers) and carry on making bad ideas work. Go back to sleep Nottingham, I'm sure you won't notice me steal a few thousand of your hard earned cash. :P”

“Well, maybe the level of interaction has died down a bit now but when it started there was a lot of interaction with the public. There were and still are flyers and such available for people who want to read more about it. There were also plans to erect a small sound system with a microphone, like in London, that would encourage anyone and anybody who had a point to make or to add to the debate but this was denied by the council.
I think another important point is how the movement in Nottingham has co-operated with the council so as not to disrupt any planned events within the square. The space they are taking up was designated by the council because it was not needed for any event that will take place, therefore it is not detracting from public funds.
Now as for the aims, i find it very strange how the media/public seem to jump all over the movement saying it has no aims or demands, like FormerlyW says they ' just showing distaste.' Well, i think the aims are quite simple, so simple that people seem to be missing it all together. It's not trying create a whole new world, a huge revolution, this isn't the rise of Communism mach 2. It just basically wants democracy to be more democratic and fairer for all.
For example as i said before about Vodafone's tax fiddle, don't let them do it!
How about the £130 billion it will cost to revamp and sustain Trident, don't do it! We don't need it! Even the MOD says we don't need it!
Stop global conglomerates coming to Britain, taking over our companies, promising one thing then doing the exact opposite and asset stripping until there's nothing left. You may remember we used to have a well renowned company called Cadburys, it was taken over by Kraft promising no job losses. Soon after one factory and 400 job losses devastate the local community. How can the government allow them to flagrantly lie and get away with it!
Shut down the tax havens that mean a huge global empire like Goldman Sachs pays a grand total of 1% tax on it's monumental profits! It's not fair!
The basic point is to call on our elected officials to stop pandering to big business and to do what's best for the people of this country, not the coporations and the 1% that hold the vast majority of the world's wealth.
Here are some of the demands that have been made by the Occupy Britain movement by the way.

“Sad, very sad to see the people of Nottingham be slaves of the mainstream media. The occupations that you are talking about it taking back what is ours in the first place. And all there is "If I done this that and the other, I'd be arrested..." Umm no you would not. Carry on shopping everyone, everything is ok, in fact it's better than ok, the world is not collapsing before your very eyes... it's a dream. Yes, you've been dreaming that Bankers have shafted us and now want a bonus for it. You forget that the markets will make the best out of this situation where they can now buy public services for next to nothing.. You forget that mine and your children now have a debt from which they have no part of. You forget that this is all one big sideshow for the political elite. You forget that corporations have the same rights as an individual. Now grow up Nottingham or you will be led like sheep to the slaughter.
That is all. Ohh and to the trolls... go get yourself a life (don't say you have one, because clearly you do not!)”

“Oh shut up BJ.
Like I said last night you really shouldn't be posting on this site because your barred - because people object to your constant trolling and abstract rants. However, because you are so desperate for someone or something to engage with you create a false user name and profile. It is a bit sad really. Did your parents tie a dogs bone around your neck when you were a child?”

“Harry maybe you miss my point and that is if this is a protest where are all the protesters and why aren't they engaging the public. The stall might only be an information point and that's fine but surly the people who have seen fit to take up space that might have been used to bring funds into the council should at least use the time and space to be more pro active as I'm sure that most of the tax paying public cannot identify with this mock protest as they don't appear to be there to protest or enlighten the masses.”

“They are clearly trying to do something, Harry, but I find the ill-focused nature of their protest really doesn't do much to promote anything other than the status quo: a protest that simply expresses its distaste for the way the world is, without coming up with a workable alternative, simply re-enforces the view that we are stuck with the mess we are in.”

“It's so very sad to see people venting their anger on the people involved in the Occupy movement when there is a much better and more deserving recipient of their anger. The Occupy movement is now ongoing in 2465 cities throughout the world, even Peterborough has a small encampment.
All these camps are there as an ongoing protest against many issues that i'm sure most people would agree with. For example the deep cuts to public services, bankers bonus culture, big business influence on government policies to benefit them and not UK citizens.
Let me ask those who criticise this movement, 'Are you in agreement that Vodafone should be able to get away without paying £6 billion in tax revenue owed to HRMC?' In other words 6x the amount that the government (and many conservative newspapers) suggest is being lost to the 'benefit cheats' in Britain every year.
That is just one example of the different issues this camp stands against and if people would go to the 'stand' that KICKSYC refers to in his post they will find it is not there to sell anything, only to give information on these issues. I think more people should go there and become educated on these issues rather than burying their heads in the sand and then complaining when things go wrong.
'All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing'
So whether you think these people are going about their protest in the right or wrong fashion at least they are trying to do something which is more than can be said for most.”

“Firstly, gobby, who mentioned people engaging with my points?
Oh, it was you!
And what has it got to do with either you or the topic?!?!?!
.
Secondly, people ARE engaging with my posts, otherwise I wouldn't be replying to replies, would I?
Including to YOURSELF!
.
Thirdly, if you had actually bothered to read the article, the thread, or my contributions, you would have spotted my reply was to another post about the current economic system, so it's totally on topic.
And therefore totally related to the protest in Market Square.
.
So why don't YOU:
"Please try to keep on the topic."?
.”

“@MarkXBSSensor
I expect people aren't engaging with your points because they're totally unrelated to the protest in Market Square. Please try to keep on the topic.”

“Yes, Smithy, there ARE a lot of people around who can't formulate a better argument, say against:
(Crossbencher) Baroness Flather (from Lahore) said Pakistani AND Bangladeshi familieS had large families to get a bigger house.
AND
"And I take it that they have chosen to cap housing benefits at £500 PER WEEK to make sure there is NO chance WHATSOEVER of ANYONE on benefits being moved out of their current state (ie taxpayer) provided home."
(In case you missed it, that was a sarcastic reflection at the outcry about how many poor ickle benefit claimants would have to move from £500 PLUS PER WEEK houses to "only" £500 PER WEEK houses.)
Than:
"One or two extreme cases is no way a reflection of the norm - and you know that."
And then have to resort to censorship (or worse) to "win" the "debate".
And you're STILL not adressing the salient points.
And you STILL haven't checked up the definition of "bigot".
You're not really FW, are you?!”
