A MAN who died after he fell from a seven storey block of flats in Radford killed himself because his struggle to claim asylum in the UK became impossible, it has been reported.

Osman Rasul Mohammed, 27, of Beech Avenue, Hyson Green, had been involved with Nottingham Refugee Centre for the last year.

The Iraqi Kurd had been sleeping on people's floors and on the streets since the start of the year and was classed as a "destitute asylum seeker."

He had been going to the centre for support and advice about how he could remain in the UK, particularly after the collapse of Refugee and Migrant Justice (RMJ) which went into administration in June. The RMJ provided legal advice and representation for asylum seekers.

Bea Tobolewska, manager of the refugee forum, said: "He had been coming and asking for advice on how he could get support.

"He had been sleeping on people's sofas and things like that and was also street homeless.

"Being a Kurdish and from Iraq there would have been a lot of issues around how Kurds are treated in that country.

"With the collapse of the RMJ anyone that had legal representation through them would have found themselves without a solicitor and their legal documents would have been put into storage.

"It's a desperate situation for a lot of people, it's had a real knock on effect to how busy we are here.

"As an asylum seeker you are in a situation of uncertainty and left in limbo when you have been working towards getting your case supported. It also affects your sense of hope."

Rasul died at about 7pm last Sunday after he fell from the seventh floor of Clifford Court Tower.

He had been in the UK for almost ten years and had been receiving food parcels and £10 a month from the refugee forum.

An appeal has now been launched to raise money to send his body home to his mother.

“John, swallow your disgraceful crocodile tears and get back your BNP troll hole. People like myself who knew Osman find your views disgusting.

It is not RMJ's "false hope" that was to blame but the shocking behaviour of UKBA officials in Croydon combined with the strangling of funding for the widely praised RMJ. If you'd read a decent report you might realise more: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/aug/01/asylum-seeker-osman-rasul-death-legal-aid

That Osman's mother is in Iraq does not mean that she is safe! You know nothing about Osman's case yet you presume he was just another 'bogus' asylum seeker. You are blind and quite wrong.”

“This is an absolute tragedy. Perhaps if groups like RMJ hadn't given him false hope he might be alive today.
Its ironic that that they are now sending him back to his family - who appear to be quite safe in Iraq.”
