NOTTS County's wage bill is higher than last season.

It was widely thought the club's owner Ray Trew was intent on cutting the player budget at Meadow Lane during the summer to ease the club's financial liabilities.

Last season's top earner Kasper Schmeichel left Meadow Lane, and another player on high wages, Johnnie Jackson, was also allowed to leave the club.

Trew has revealed, however, the League Two champions' wage bill has actually increased by around £100,000 from last season after they made 11 new signings.

He said: "The monies for salaries are not far different to last season, we have just distributed them differently. In fact, the salaries are around £100,000 higher than last season.

"If we had remained in League Two we would have reduced our wage bill.

"But we won the title and we have ambitions for this club to progress further and challenge for promotion into the Championship.

"You only have to look at our squad to see how committed we are to fulfilling our ambitions.

"We have signed several Championship-quality players like Jon Harley, Ben Burgess, John Spicer and Liam Chilvers."

The Magpies' former manager Steve Cotterill decided not to sign a new deal in the summer because he felt the budget was insufficient to build a squad capable of challenging for a second promotion in two seasons.

"We had to bite our tongue a bit when Steve left and it was mooted one of the reasons was the budget," added Trew.

"We are not going to compete with some of the other clubs in our division, like Southampton, but we have a competitive budget.

"There is a group of teams, maybe five or six, who have been in the Championship and Premier League and have bigger wage bills than us. I think we are at the top of the next group."

Despite committing huge sums of cash on salaries with the aim of winning promotion into the Championship, Trew has still been careful to protect the future of the club.

"If we are relegated the players wages will be reduced because it's in their contracts," he revealed. "While we are ambitious, we have to safeguard the future of the club."
