Looking back: The day Notts last beat Forest
Notts 2 Forest 1,
Meadow Lane, February 12, 1994
IT IS almost exactly 18 years ago that Notts County famously beat their arch-rivals Nottingham Forest at Meadow Lane, but memories of Charlie Palmer's winning goal have not dimmed for Magpies' supporters.
It was their first league win against the Reds for 12 years and it is still today the last time they beat them.
Unbelievably too, Palmer's 86th-minute winner was his first goal for two seasons and his first league strike since 1990.
Forest keeper Mark Crossley made a superb save to deny Gary Lund early on, but the visitors failed to even once test Steve Cherry in a goalless first half.
Lars Bohinen wasted their best chance when he failed to make contact with Des Lyttle's cross on the line.
Magpies striker Gary McSwegan was denied in the opening minutes of the second half and the Scottish striker then hit the post before putting Notts ahead on 55 minutes, with his 11th goal of the season.
Michael Johnson played a great ball forward, enabling McSwegan to cut inside both Steve Chettle and Colin Cooper to smash a low shot past Crossley.
Forest might have been awarded a penalty two minutes later when Colin Foster appeared to handle Stuart Pearce's cross.
They were also unfortunate on 64 minutes when a Lee Glover header looked destined for the net until it struck team-mate Cooper and went over the bar.
They equalised after 84 minutes, when Pearce's shot from inside the penalty area was blocked and David Phillips pounced on the rebound.
The game looked set to end in a stalemate until Mark Draper's precise free-kick was emphatically finished by Palmer.
It was a win that lifted the Magpies to within seven points of Forest and re-ignited hopes they could stage a promotion challenge to the Premier League.
But it was a victory that meant more to the club and its fans than just three points.

“Angus you are missing the point.
Yes, you have won more derby games than us and scored more goals, but if you had really been 'destroying pies since 1865', the record would be a lot more one-sided than that.
As it stands, Notts have won 32,5% of those derby games, Forest have won 40,7%. Of 227 goals scored, Notts have scored 47% and Forest 53%.
You call that destruction?
Take a look at your record against Man Utd. That's what I call destruction.”

“Munichpie.... So what you are saying is the records show that Forest have won more of Nottingham's de**y games than notts have and scored more goals than notts have in doing so.
Shucks! I guess we'll just have to live with it!”

“Angus;
for your information, the complete league record between Notts and Forest is:
Notts 28 wins
Forest 35 wins
Draws 23
Notts 107 goals

You claim 'Destroying pies since 1865' doesn't quit fit the bill - does it?”
