Local CDs: Huw Costin/Becky Syson
Huw Costin: Regrets
The long-awaited debut solo album from a veteran of the local music scene, a one-time member of Earth The Californian Love Dream and recently folded The Cold Light Of Day, opens with the misleadingly sombre We Ride before giving way to the unusual but brilliant title track. That and the hippy-era folk song Lover have been around a while but fit nicely with this concept album. It's largely acoustic but broad in scope, from 60s-style folk (I'm Gonna Miss You, Time) to dark, thudding indie (Leisure & Technology). Costin's voice recalls The Coral's James Skelly then Ian Brown but its real appeal are the subtle, addictive melodies.

Becky Syson: Weave Your Dreams
Written with the people closest to her heart in mind, this EP from the lively singer songwriter and occasional EG model has a sweet and personal touch and is immaculately produced. Breezy acoustics carry exceptional melodies that uplift. Her purpose is unashamedly one of positivity. On My Way, a song dedicated to living your dreams, is the standout and leaves the listener wanting more. Although this latest release on Nottingham's Arboretum Records is short on tunes, it teases fans of this prolific performer and indicates there's plenty more to come.
