This is Nottingham

FEATURING on this week's music video showcase is Timothy J Simpson, a "lyrical, leftfield" singer-songwriter.

He is about to release a debut album of edgy, sweet 'n' sour songs – which is in contrast to his other musical project, fronting Notts punk band THAT Crime Scene. He also finds time to be one half of acoustic duo The Victorious.

Watch Timothy being interviewed at the Rescue Rooms by Zoe Kirk and performing a "clean" version of his track, Keytones.

And you are?

Timothy J Simpson, guitar and vocals – although on the album I also play bass and keyboards and a whole host of other stuff.

History?

I'm a solo performer but I'm also the singer for Notts punk 'n' roll combo THAT Crime Scene. I was the guitarist and singer for the (now defunct) alt-rock band Hail! Zeus. I'm also working on a separate project with a really talented vocalist, Ali Groves, called The Victorious. I first started playing solo after I moved to London, but I'm from Nottingham and the draw to come back was too strong.

Describe your music and influences.

I have a very lyrical singing style. My songs are usually about ordinary kitchen sink stuff – soul-crushing workplaces, heartbreak, violence and disappointment. Cheery I know. The music is pretty upbeat though. I guess my main influences would be people like Elvis Costello and Tom Waits.

What's the day job?

I'm a charity worker – but not a chugger. I work for Mencap, the learning disability charity.

Claims to fame?

As a child I once urinated into Carlton Forum swimming baths from the side of the pool. We were in a hurry to leave the changing rooms and somebody had told me just to go in the pool.

Which other Notts bands do you rate?

Lords are amazing, and I'm a big fan of Fists. My all time favourite Notts bands/artists are Scout Niblett and Wolves! Of Grease.

Music for sale?

The album, Our Glorious Hero Battles The Man is out soon. The title is going to be available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify... all the usual places for £5.99.
