This is Nottingham

THIS week on our music video showcase, Zoe Kirk catches up with Nottingham's increasingly popular indie pop quartet, Captain Dangerous.

These guys are no strangers to This Is Live, having appeared on here a year ago and, in the summer, we presented them in The Big Top at Splendour festival.

Watch Adam, Miles and Jamie chatting to Zoe on the Stealth sofa and performing, exclusively for This Is Live, a brand new track, If God Exists.

And you are?

Adam Clarkson (guitar, vocals, uke), Mark Houlgate (bass, vocals), Miles Clark (guitar, violin, melodica), Jamie Elliott (drums)

History?

Mark used to bully me (Adam) on my paper round and we somehow became friends and formed a duo called Hi...Is Nathan There Please? We were just a couple of teenagers writing songs but it was fun. Then a few years later I met Miles in Lincoln and Jamie most recently.

What's with the band name?

It doesn't actually mean much but I remember seeing a condom machine and the condoms were called "Captain Condom" – it came from there I think. So I suppose we're named after condoms. I'll be the first to admit it's a terrible name.

Describe your music and influences.

I think we make pretty decent pop music with (hopefully) good lyrics. My influences at the moment are Johnny Flynn, Blonde Redhead and Los Campesinos. And I'm still obsessed with Darren Hayman.

Claims to fame?

Mark met Buddy Guy a few weeks ago, Jamie's dad was in Lonnie Donegan's band and I spotted Miles chatting to Tim Wheeler a few weeks ago at a festival. There you go.

Which other Notts bands do you rate?

I think Andy Wright (We Show Up On Radar) is a genius. I like Fists, Dog Is Dead, Lovvers, Lisa de'Ville and Illuminatus mainly. There's a much more friendly climate now I think for bands and lots of little labels springing up.

Next gig?

Tomorrow at The Chameleon in Angel Row and we're playing the BBC Introducing Stage at The Hockley Hustle, October 25.

Music for sale?

Our second single I Miss You Cos It's Monday has just come out. The limited edition is in independent records shops and iTunes.
