CHARLIE Lister has already put the disappointment of missing out on the Greyhound Derby behind him.

The Newark trainer just failed to make history at Wimbledon by a gnat's whisker but he now believes he has got a puppy which could do the business next at Wimbledon.

"I was really disappointed after the final but we have no excuses really and good luck to the connections of the winner," he said.

"But I'm already looking for a couple of dogs for next year's event. I've got a nice puppy in Bandicoot Tipoki, who won the puppy race at Wimbledon and is obviously one of those we will aim at the Derby.

"He showed good speed up the backside at the weekend after he didn't really trap at the track. I don't know why he broke like that.

"Bandicoot Tipoki flies out of the traps at Nottingham and he has the ability to break well."

Lister looked certain to train his fifth Derby winner with Fear Zafonic as the field scampered into the straight, but he was mugged right on the line by the 25-1 outsider Kinda Ready.

"Zafonic was caught right on the nod," said Lister."He did everything right, leading from the boxes and when you get caught from behind like that, there are no excuses. That's racing."

Lister believes the winner had the luck to win a championship race like the Derby.

He said: "It was a good final in terms of quality. The trap-two dog Ballymac Ruso moved as he approached the first bend and took care of the others. It allowed Kinda Ready to shoot up the rails.

"If he hadn't got that run, I think we would have had a different result. But I re- member him beating Bandicoot Tipoki in the Puppy Derby so I know how strong he can be in a finish."

Fear Zafonic is one the tightest railers in racing but Lister insists he didn't run the bends as he could have done."

He said: "He moved off a bit in the semi-finals and I was a little bit concerned then. I don't think he ran the bends at the track as well as he can."

Lister's other runner, Farloe Reason, took a fair bit of buffeting during the race.

"Farloe took a bit of a hammering but he's fine," said Lister. "They will have a two-week break now and we will map out a programme for them.

"There are plenty of good races to go for in the coming months and I'm sure we will have a few good nights coming up."
