Gary Long, city council Liberal Democrat leader.

"WE would save some money by not rebuilding the Victoria Leisure Centre as Labour has proposed.

"We propose to refurbish it, which is what the local community appear to be asking for.

"The money we would save is about £5.5m.

"Of that about £5m would go to towards pavements and roads and we would use £500k to buy proper equipment for street-cleaning teams.

"Labour is proposing to increase the revenue budget for street cleansing by £600k but we would not provide that money because it would deliver more of the same.

"We think the council could save on public relations expenditure. There are no cuts at all proposed by Labour in marketing, communications, or the Arrow newsletter, despite the fact we are cutting some front-line services.

We would give more money [£250k] on aids and adaptations [for older and disabled people], and we would put more money into tree trimming. Trees cover footpaths and cover signs in the road."
