Letter: Circus protest
I am writing to protest about The Great British Circus at Newark Showground.
This circus features performing animals including elephants, lions tigers, horses, llamas, reindeer, camels and zebras.
These poor creatures are made to do things which are totally alien and unnatural to them.
After they have finished at a venue, the animals are put in cages and transported for many miles to the next place in cramped cages.
They may be fed and watered adequately but every one of these animals is spending its life confined and is not able to behave as it would if it was living in its natural habitat in the wild.
This causes terrible stress to the animal. It is extremely cruel and a graphic example of the way animals are exploited by man for financial gain.
I urge everyone who was going to go to this circus to think again and make a stand for the animals by boycotting this spectacle.

“There are also more serious things to do in life than watching poor imprisoned animals performing tricks for your enjoyment!
Of course they all looked well fed and groomed - what did you expect them look like - skinny and filthy? Circus folk make their money out of niave people like you!
Rather ridiculous to compare how animals should be treated in the UK, to the `dark-ages` treatment of animals in India, Indonesia and China!
Time that you woke up to the real world!

“Great show , animals all looked fine to me, well fed and groomed.
Instead of doing your silly little protest here go to India , see how they work the elephants, go to Indonesia , China and many others see how they treat animals. Get a life you lot there are really more serious things to protest about than well run Zoos and Circuses.”

“There were 21-31 protest replies to this post just over an hour ago. Most seem to have vanished, including mine-so here`s a repeat of what I wrote!
------------
This is an Appalling Animal Cruelty!
Apart from the obvious cruelty of forcing such animals to exist in an imprisoned environment, for life, no animal should be forced to perform for the financial gain or enjoyment of any human!
According to the German press, 2 of these elephants, the african ones called Sonja and Wana Bana, are well over 30 years old. The Indian elephant called Dehli, is 40 years old and has already been hoisted up by crains at least twice in the past, and once nearly suffocated. The reason it couldn`t get up on its own, is because it`s had a stiff leg for the past 20 years - caused by arthiritus ! This poor animal must be in agonising pain and yet, it`s still forced to perform and train for hours every day!
Elephants are highly sensitive, so for them to be shipped around Europe to perform in circuses must be extremely traumatizing for them, to say the least!
Anyone who visits this circus to watch these sad imprisoned animals performing for the financial gain of some individuals, should, in my opinion, be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

“what should we do with these animals now we have no use for them?
What use do us as brits have for circus animals anyway, didnt know we ate elephant zebra and camel? all of which are native to other continents than ours.
I think that your lack of knowledge clearly shines through here Andy
It has been proven by rspca and other animal governing bodies that animals are starved, beaten and killed in the name of the circus, with video evidence to prove it
Animals are not ours to inflict this kind of treatment on, these animals belong in the wild not in some poxy circus
Andy I challenge you to go and check out peta.org and look at the videos on there and then come back and say you think it is right to have animals in a circus, there is one of their front page introduced by lena heady
does anyone know of a protest at this circus in newark as I wold love to go and show my support

“Andy
"what should we do with these animals now that we ahve no use for them "
Are you REALLY that naive!!!
These poor animals are bred to "entertain" do you think they were given to the circus because some poor soul couldn't look after them
elephants belong in their natural habitat
What use do we have for elephants anyway??? So i don't really understand you comment on that anyway
you have no idea how badly they are treated, it is unnatural for elephants to stand on their hind legs with regalia around their bodies
Who gives us as so called humans the right to inflict pain and misery on defenceless animals?
Animals belong in the wild, not in the circus!!
you should go on peta.org and get some more information on this, look at the videos and then make you comments
Are their any protests at this circus in newark? I wouldl ove ot go and support them”

“I totally agree with you Margaret. This type of circus has no place in a supposedly civilized society. It is shameful that Newark Showground are hosting such a cruel, barbaric show. Andy from Manchester, you have no idea! Where do you get your hare brained notions from? You views are certainly not suported by the RSPCA, London Zoological Society, Born Free or any other repectable animal charity. You must work for the circus, or be one of those idiot parents who think it is OK to take your children to the circus. I'm taking my daughters down to the showground to protest this weekend. Lets hope more right minded people join us .”

“Seriously Margaret, you are obviously not very experienced in this subject for your lack of knowledge shines through. What should we do with these animals now that you have no use for them? Zoos are equally taboo! Your Gov't spent two years looking at this and scientifically determined that circuses were not inherently cruel and that there was no evidence that the needs of such non domesticated animals could not and were not being met in circuses. Maybe they are wrong and you are right afterall?”
