Kreepers club night
SID Vicious meets Elvis – that's how promoter Katie Kaos describes the psychobilly music that drives the Kreepers club night at Hockley's Old Angel. It was recently Pick of the Week in The Guardian's leisure section, beating hundreds of club nights across the Midlands.
Your next chance to go along and see what the fuss is about is on Saturday, July 4.
Describing the sound, Katie said: "It's punk rock and psychobilly. Elvis is rockabilly – it's like rock and roll, with a punky edge.
"Bands that are typical of the sound include The Stray Cats, The Meteors and Demented Are Go."
Kreepers regularly draws a capacity house 100-strong, and many people into the psychobilly scene like to rock a certain look there.
"A lot of the girls wear 1950s-style retro quiffs, little fringes, or wear their hair up in bandanas; the blokes often have their hair styled in a 1950s pompadour, or flat-top.
"It was such a cult scene in the 1980s, and the '80s look is actually really popular in fashion at the moment... but a lot of the kids don't know anything about the music!
"We hope that interest will be reborn again.
"The guys have a certain dance style called 'wrecking' : it's a bit like moshing at the front, but they dance with their elbows... it's hard to describe!"
Although many regulars enjoy the look, Kreepers has no dress code and everyone is welcome to go along and see.
Katie said: "Our guests on July 4 are The Grit from Newcastle.
"They played with huge success at Leeds and Reading festivals last summer and recently played a live session for Radio 1."
Also on the bill that night are A Sailor's Grave from Manchester, and Hollywood Suicide, as well as Katie's husband DJ Stripe on the decks.
The couple, from Sneinton, go by stage names to keep their psychobilly alter-egos quite separate from their professional identities.
"We both promote the night, but Stripe also DJs all over the country and Europe," said Katie, 29.
"Nottingham has always been known as an alternative scene and we, along with other alternative promoters, are trying to keep it up.
"Along with playing some of today's hottest new acts, we remember the bands who kick-started it. Every month we bring in a guest DJ. We have had sets by Smeggy (King Curt), Humungus (Coffin Nails) and Mark (Caravans)."
Kreepers tickets are £7 in advance from www.ticketweb.com, or £9 on the door – but arrive early as it fills up fast.
