She said it was helpful as Amie is taking a year out before university, while Katie is considering her options.

"If you're not 100% sure what you want to do, when you look around you get ideas," said their mother.

Katie added: "I've found different things and it's been really helpful."

Dozens of schools and colleges were showcasing courses including South Notts College, which had a DJ in a tent outside the stadium drawing in youngsters.

Many visitors asked about apprenticeships, including Sam Godwin, 15, who goes to Emmanuel School, Wilford, and his dad Philip.

Mr Godwin said: "We've been told about a couple of apprenticeships and we've been given a couple of websites with vacancies. I didn't know that sort of thing existed anymore."

Some students visiting the stalls were younger and just trying to get some ideas of what is out there. James Lanceley, 13, is in year nine at Trinity School, Aspley, and is deciding what subjects to take for GCSE.

"It's been good to see all the choices," he said."

Sheron Hambly, of organisers Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Futures, said the fair had been a great success. She said: "It's gone really well. We opened an hour earlier this year and we had a flood of people. We're very pleased with the turnout, it's a steady stream."
