CROWNING Jewel has been unearthed a fine opportunity at Kelso in which to set the record straight.

Keith Reveley's six-year-old was turned over as an odds-on chance at Catterick last month, but redemption should be forthcoming in the EBF "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle.

Crowning Jewel did not do a great deal wrong in North Yorkshire, though jockey James Reveley may have wished he was a little closer to the speed as his partner looked a shade flat-footed approaching the straight.

Reveley's inmate finished third behind Bourne and Into Wain, but picked up encouragingly late on.

With that in mind, it is perhaps not the biggest shock in the world to see Crowning Jewel step up two miles, six-and-a-half furlongs here.

And while Bourne failed to advertise the form at Musselburgh on New Year's Day, it was reassuring to see Into Wain, who runs earlier, win with a little authority at Kelso a couple of weeks ago.

Before that, Crowning Jewel finished second on his hurdling debut at Newcastle, when the likeable Malt Master proved a length and a half too strong.

That form again looks watertight as the winner is surely destined for better things, and the third home, Diamond D'Amour, has since struck at Carlisle.

Those prepared to forgive Crowning Jewel for his Catterick trespasses can gain sweet revenge at the Borders circuit.
