CLIFTON chart-topper Jake Bugg lost out to Ben Howard at tonight's Brit Awards for the British Breakthrough Act gong.

The 18-year-old believed his chances of winning were "very slim". Although he had tipped the bookies' favourite Rita Ora to win.

The winner was voted for by listeners to Radio 1 and online. Last week, Nottingham got behind its most successful solo artist with a Twitter campaign to boost his chances.

The Brit Awards at the o2 Arena in London featured performances by Robbie Williams, Justin Timberlake, One Direction, Emili Sande, Muse and Mumford & Sons.

There was no sign of Jake at the event. He had hinted that he may not attend, even though he had a day off from his sell-out UK tour.

The last Nottingham Brit Award winners were 19 years ago when Stereo MCs, featuring local men Rob Birch and Nick Hallam, picked up Best Group and Best Album for Connected.
