A Nottingham woman who falsely claimed three men had raped her has been jailed for two years.

Rosie Dodd, 20, of North Sherwood Street, was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday after lying to police that three men had raped her in June last year.

She claimed the men - aged 21, 23 and 25 - assaulted her at an address in Clifton in the early hours of Saturday 4 June.

She said she had gone back to a house with the men, who she had met while out in Nottingham, and they had each raped her.

They were arrested on suspicion of rape and spent a total of nearly 50 hours in police custody before being released on bail.

They maintained that Dodd had willingly had sex with them.

After carrying out further enquiries, police began to have concerns about Dodd’s account and, when challenged, she admitted that she had actually had consensual sex with the men and had made up the rape claims because she regretted it.

She was charged with perverting the course of justice, to which she pleaded guilty at a previous hearing.

Detective Constable Gina Farrell, who led the investigation, said: “We take every report of rape and sexual assault extremely seriously, just as we did in this case. But it soon became apparent that there were inconsistencies with Dodd’s account.

“The three men accused of rape were quite badly affected by the damaging accusations and Dodd has never shown an ounce of remorse for what she put them through.

“The time our specially-trained officers spent with her could have been spent with someone who really needed our help.”

Detective Inspector Stephen Waldram, head of the city Rape Investigation Team, added: “People lie that they’ve been raped for a multitude of reasons - like having regrets about having sex with a person, or as a way of getting back at someone.

“There is no justification for lying about something so serious and incredibly damaging and police actively investigate a false claim just as thoroughly as a genuine one to ensure innocent people are not convicted for something they didn’t do.

“It’s important to stress that anyone who contacts us to say they have been assaulted will be treated with the sensitivity and respect they deserve.

“It can be incredibly difficult for victims of rape to come forward to police and tell us what’s happened to them, which is why it’s so important for us to prosecute those who take up our time by lying to us.

“I would urge genuine victims to come forward and tell us if they have been raped or sexually assaulted. Only then can we begin to bring those responsible to justice.

“And I would remind anyone considering making a false report to think again. We carry out extremely thorough and in-depth investigations and their lies will be exposed.”

“This story has now gone international. For those of us who missed the local stories ... how did her testimony in court differ from her statement to police when she recanted? After the incident, did she go straight to the police, or did she talk to someone who then told her to go to the police? Like others, I'm suspicious -- "regret" doesn't seem enough of an explanation. Were the guys popular? How was she harassed? What does her own lawyer say?

By the way, if there are any women still reading ... this case makes a great way to test whether or not you want to date a man. Does he believe that many women lie about being raped, and is he gleeful that this woman will be imprisoned? Does he think she's a **** but the men are fine, upstanding guys? Does he think that a woman who goes to a man's home by herself is "asking for it," and has no defense if they force her to have sex? Does he think it's OK for men to have sex with a woman who is too drunk/stoned to give informed consent? If so, run from these men.”

“I was sexually assaulted & spiked in the city center - when the police questioned me in the morning at the hospital, the way the went about it they may it sound like I had to much to drink, I am 25 not 15 I do know my limit, I dont binge drink, I had 3 double spirts & felt fine until I got brought a drink - my mistake - but after the way I was questioned the next day I didnt take the case further, they suggested nothing had happened & maybe it was my so called memory - trust me i knew my body - so my input is if this women was lying shame on her but if she retracted her statement due to the questioning she got from the police, I know how she feels.”

“M Senior writes "So she was asked to raped was she?" - No she CONSENTED.

2nd Council writes "It doesnt actually matter about whether she consented or not, because she had gone alone to a house with three men so whatever happened there was fair game huh?" - No she CONSENTED.

2nd Council also writes "I'm not surprised that another victim of sexual assault is worried that this case could put victims off from going to the police." - Yes Rosie has unfortunately let down real victims of sexual assault. She consented, regretted it and then LIED.

The victims here are now the three lads for having to go through the ordeal of being labelled rapists.

In this case, the justice system has served the victim(s).”

“That finding of approximately 1 in 3 female prisoners being the victims of sexual abuse is replicated in other studies within the last five years.

See details in Noblet - Women in Prison

    Link - http://tinyurl.com/9arqlsc

Which quotes sexual abuse rates of 34% in female remand prisoners, and 31% in female convicted prisoners.”

“"We lock up 50% more victims of sexual assault each year than we lock up perpetrators. (Source: Howard League for Penal Reform)" --- 2nd Council

Well, that's a fairly provocative statement, so lets try and trace its source.

What you seem to be referring to is a blog post rather than any kind of researched policy document (http://tinyurl.com/2cgrumg), which states that "According to a Social Exclusion Unit study in 2002, 1 in 3 women in prison have been the victim of a sexual assault."

What the study in question, "Reducing reoffending by ex-prisoners" (http://tinyurl.com/9w6odop), actually says is "A significant number of women in prison, one survey has suggested up to a third, have been the victims of sexual abuse." Note now that we have gone from a statement of fact to a suggested possibility of an upper bound based on one study.

The study in question according to the referencing in this paper is: "307. A Maden, M Swinton and J Gunn, A Criminological and Psychiatric Survey of Women Serving a Prison Sentence, British Journal of Criminology 34 (2), 1994", but in fact this paper makes no reference at all to the number of women in proison who had been victims of sexual abuse, instead being almost exclusively to do with rates of psychiatric problems and drug abuse amongst women in prison, so seems a complete misquotation.

So a misreference turning into a single suggestion of a possible upper limit turning into a general statement of a definite value in a blog post turning into a general statement with an official source. Quite an impressive chain of misinformation to re-enforce your prejudices really.”
