STEPHEN McLaughlin is to hold talks with Nottingham Forest over a possible move to the City Ground, according to the Derry City winger.

The 22-year-old recently had a trial with the Reds and the Irish youngster will travel to Nottingham tomorrow to hold talks with the Championship club.

If those talks are successful, McLaughlin could undergo a medical on the same day ahead of securing a deal, which could see Forest pay up to £200,000 for his services.

"I go over on Tuesday, but nothing has been agreed yet," said McLaughlin.

"It has been a long couple of weeks, not knowing what was going to happen, but hopefully now things are moving and everything will be sorted out.

"It would be a nice Christmas present, but I'm going over for talks on Tuesday and see what happens from there."

He told the Londonderry Sentinel: "If I get the opportunity to sign for Forest then yes I'll be over the moon, who wouldn't be delighted?

"I enjoyed my time with Forest (on trial), yes it's a massive step up from League of Ireland, because there is better players, better facilities and better training.

"Once I got over my nerves at the start of the week I was OK and I got on alright, their training wasn't a major shock to me.

"Yes it was quicker, but once I got up to speed I was fine; I think I was nervous because you just don't know what to expect, but when I was leaving I felt grand and that I did OK."

“2005. Reading signed 2 Irish players from Cork City for very small fees. Shane Long and Kevin Doyle. They didn't turn out to be bad players. Neither did Roy Keane or Martin O'Neill. In fact, Ireland is one of the best places to scout because there's really good players at not well known clubs, but if you can find them and pick them up cheap then you're laughing.”

“Anyone know if the Irish lads have signed it was touted about that NLN was trying to snatch him but couldn't afford the down payment of 2 pounds 50 but Mclaughlin wasnt interested anyway he stated that at 22 he would be seen to be too old for the sheep as they only play school boys 15 years old and above and why join Direby who have no history and never won anything besides some coffee cup they hold in there trophy cabinet when I hope to be able to join a club that is looking to better itself and not just stand still like the previous fives seasons.”

“Oh no not another lot of substandard misfits from across the Irish sea.
Hope they prove better than the other rejects Liam O'Kane, Marin O'Neil and Roy Keane.
Forget this scouting lark or we may even get lumbered with a George Best”

“Paulderby I have reported you for racial abuse. I hope you are banned permanently.

See all the plebs have crawled out from the gutter. Suppose it's a drawback of being famous as opposed to er, well Derby. Anyway, how would the average Derby fan know what other stadia have or have not. Non of them ever go to away games.”

“A quick google of emanuelle riviere tells me that he ain't coming to us. Arsenal and Liverpool interested. £10 million fee mentioned. Or is there another emanuelle riviere? Could be a common name down his way.

Still. Any £4.2million player will do for me. Can't wait 'til the window opens, even if it is cold outside.”

“Don't go to tin pot Forest young man.

You are 22 years of age. The tin pot outfit have not been in the prem for 14 years and you could waste your career going to a club where you will never experience the big time. You might have to play some of your football with the deadbeats of the third division as was the case with tin pot Forest only 4 years ago.

Join someone decent who is capable of prem football.

    Can't stop laughing.”

“Brinders, the mention of Archie Gemmill was deliberate. Had you read my comments correctly, you would have read "and players from much lower clubs". Just a bit of humour and I know that Archie was also a great player when he was with the sheep. Mind you he was a Forest player when he scored that superb goal against the Dutch.”
