This result was an improvement from the school's previous inspection, when it was awarded a "satisfactory" rating.
In the report, Ofsted lead inspector Lynne Blakelock commented: "Standards have risen over the last three years from significantly below average to average, in the proportion of students achieving five A* to C grades, including English and mathematics, and at A-level."
She went on: "Although not all teaching is good, a growing amount is, including in the sixth form, and over time it means students achieve well."
The inspectors' report added that the school's teachers had to strive harder in order to reach an outstanding rating at its next inspection.
