AN Ilkeston man has set a new world record for balancing a tower of books on his head.

John Evans balanced 204 books, which stood at a height of one metre and 24.8cm.

The feat, which took place near Manchester last Sunday, broke the previous record of one metre 24cm, which had also been set by Mr Evans.

The record-breaking tower also weighed 128.8kg – 30kg heavier than his former record.

A can of hairspray was used to stop the books from slipping.

Mr Evans said: "I had my doubts at one point as to whether I would actually be able to break the record, but there was no way I was leaving the stage until I had."
