SMALL-SCALE hydro-electric power generators are to be built on the River Trent.

British Waterways has today announced an agreement with The Small Hydro Company Ltd to generate enough power for 40,000 homes using the public corporation's 2,200 mile waterway network.

The Trent has been announced as one of the first five rivers where the process of gaining consent is due to start later this month. Details of the schemes will be revealed when consultation begins.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband MP said: "By committing to build small hydro power stations and wind turbines, British Waterways is playing an important role in generating renewable energy from the UK's natural resources. This will help cut carbon emissions and further secure energy supplies.

"We want even more homes, communities, businesses and public sector organisations to take action and play a part."

“This is a good idea if such schemes can be introduced without too many affects on other river users.

One friend of mine restored an old mill several years ago, we renovated the old water wheel, i installed a constant speed gearbox and connected an approved alternator, he now generates sufficient power for his property, and supplies the grid with his surplus and gets paid for it.”

“rubbish news - for boaters and anglers and wildlife! since the hydroplant was put in at beeston - the trent there has been a shadow of itself - at times fluctuating levels and flows by as much as nearly 3 feet in 20 or so mins below the weir - pretty dangerous and. to the point in summer where dry patches appear in mid river and small fish are left flapping about. Not to mention plenty of stories of boats running aground above the weir!! another example of interfering in nature and not worrying about any consequences”
