Anger over job losses at Nottingham City Council
FURIOUS union officials have accused Nottingham City Council of failing to make a convincing case for axing more than 350 jobs.
The local authority told staff today it was seeking to save £12m in 2009/10 by cutting its workforce.

Gary Ward, branch secretary at Unison, outside the Council House following the news that more than 350 jobs are to go at Nottingham City Council to make up a huge funding shortfall
Some 400 staff will be affected by the cuts. Council officials also estimate up to 80 vacant posts will also be cut.

Gary Ward, city council branch secretary of Unison, said: “No specific details on the reasons for such a shortfall have been given, which is clearly unacceptable.”
“It is disgraceful that the Council has issued this information without sufficient detail, particularly due to the increased anxieties that this will inevitably cause for our members, many of whom are already suffering as a result of the “credit crunch”, and who will now also be in fear of losing their job.”
The union has written to its 5,000 members at the city council. Unison will hold meetings later this month to test the strength of feeling. Mr Ward said industrial action would be considered.
The city council has said it is facing falling income from fees and charges and rocketing costs, in terms of Children’s Services, Adult Social Care, and energy prices.
Council leader Jon Collins said: “As we are unwilling to add to residents’ financial pressure and want to keep council tax at around the rate of inflation, this is unfortunately the only way of balancing the council’s budget.”
Estimates suggest the council must make £20m of savings to balance its budget for 2009-2010.
The council blames the funding gap on increasing costs and the economic downturn.
It is struggling to meet rocketing costs in child protection, following recent criticism, while the amount of money needed for adult social care is increasing as young people with severe disabilities reach adulthood.
Staff costs are set to go up and fuel costs will be higher.
At the same time income has fallen from property owned by the council and car parking charges.
Deputy leader Coun Graham Chapman said it was the toughest budget he had known in 20 years as a councillor.
The council is to open negotiations with employees and unions to determine how many jobs are lost and in which departments.

“Mark, I doubt that those who are being made redundant will share your sentiments. And let's not forget that Council workers also comprise of teachers, bin men, dinner ladies, cleaners, etc. No-one knows yet who'll be affected (but it won't be those at the top)”

“Mac You've got a short memory havent you?
Labour and 'jobs for the boys'?
Can't you remember how the tories invented high paying jobs for their spouses and buddies and at the same time put millions out of work?
They went down in history for making the most millionairres into billionairres when they were in power. That's who they helped..
They preached greed was good, and look after yourself and s*d anyone else. They created a very selfish society and what we have today is the result! Use your head..”

“I used to work at the council for years and I saw a big difference between Labour and Tory councillors. Most of the Tory councillors could be very rude and thought they were above the rules. I remember one tory councillor in particular, driiving the wrong way round the roundabout on the council road (stupid idiot) and when a member of the public complained to her, because he and is little girl were crossing and obviously he did not expect a car coming in that direction, she told him to p**s off. He came straight to reception and told us and we told him who she was and he reported her but as far as I know he received no apology. And the councillor ended up in a very high position.”

“Amazing, no mention of a pay cut to our elected few. Perhaps Coun Collins can be the shining light and not have the new Audi A4 this year as promised !”

“Bad news for those about to be made redundant but I know the public sector and believe me, the vast majority of government jobs are meaningless exercises in red tape because there is nothing else for Brown's army of penpushers to do. The truth is that the government is so massive that it is suffocating it's own front line services, therefore, these redundancies and many more to come in the public sector are to be welcomed.”

“They can keep on cutting, as far as I'm concerned. Every Labour government ends up spending all our money and bankrupting us on hare-brained giveaways for the feckless masses and "jobs for the boys". Their cynical ploy is to make us many of us customers of the State as possible - either because we work for them in heavilt unionised jobs, or because we live off their handouts. It's tantamount to buying votes from society's least industrious and least talented.”

“ACarpenter
You've contradicted yourself there as an earlier post said you were struggling for Benefits for two years then said you both earned 76 grand? So how do you expect to get Benefits you moron? Plus I don't believe someone as boring as you has got a partner, your probably a balding, fat g*t who sits around playing World of Warcraft all day...
As for me, I don't brag about my wages, am quite happy processing claims for workshy fools like you...”

“A Carpenter, if what you say is true then I can't quite understand why you felt you still needed to claim benefits? And don't you think it just a little tactless considering there are many people worrying how they'll pay their mortgage, heat their homes and feed their families. As you said, you have no sympathy. I truly do feel sorry for you if money is the only thing that you have.”
