Hucknall once again scrape in for promotion on the final day
FOURTH-placed Hucknall needed eight points at Kirkby Portland for promotion in Division B – and this they achieved, no more, no less as for the second year running, an idle Gotham team missed out on the final day.
In the local derby, Kirkby, who have struggled for runs, racked up a teasing 199 with Gary Glenn (59) and Robbie Britton (39) in the runs. For Hucknall, left-arm spinner Adam Scott (5-53) continued his decent run of form.
Hucknall needed a minimum of 144 without being dismissed and finished 'victorious' on 160-7 with a run chase not really a viable option. Robin Maxwell and Tim Buckthorpe both made 29 as the side made it two promotions in three years.
At the wrong end of the table, Eastwood needed just four points to be safe and this was gained by bowling out bottom club Newstead Village for 166.
Eastwood's Mark Smith continued his Indian Summer, taking 5-30.
Scholes weighed in with a couple of wickets, as did Casterton as Eastwood, not for the first time this season wobbled on 130-7. Credit goes to Stephen Dockerill (22*) and Dwayne Buckley (21*) who batted sensibly to see Eastwood home to deny Newstead their first win.
All that was left to be decided in B was who would win the league. Clifton Village II started the day in pole position and stayed there with another quick fire run chase, this time at home to in-form Calverton.
Ex-Notts man Kevin Evans hit a fifty in Calverton's 152, yet this total was overhauled in only 26 overs, mainly thanks to Dan Mierklans (63) who fired 52 in boundaries off 40 balls.
Ellerslie then had to settle for runners-up spot and relegated Radcliffe II as a result. Chasing 169, Ellerslie got there in 26 overs with Ian Leach (57 in 30 balls), Kane Wilson (52) and Simon George (40) impressing.
In Division C, there was the title race while one club from five would suffer relegation.
Gedling Colliery II started the day in eighth and were most at risk after a woeful run of form.
However, they finally managed a win at bottom club Long Whatton, who collapsed to 111 in pursuit of 204.
For Gedling, James Barnes (41), Ryan Easom (37), Alpesh Toser (3-41) and Gareth Hayes (3-20) were the final day heroes.
Next in danger were Attenborough II, yet they cruised to victory at Bottesford who managed only 139.
In the reply, skipper Pete Turner (71*) led the way and shared in a match-winning partnership with Jonathan Basford (28*).
Wollaton II were next to taste victory and save themselves. Chasing 160 to win at third-place Wilsons, they managed it with three wickets left thanks to 61 from Sunil Sharma.
Kimberley II also had to win now and they faced a stiff task at home to leaders West Bridgfordians. A decent opening stand between Ryan Buckley (75) and veteran Craig Pitts (26) saw Kimberley close on 204. First teamer Dominic Wheatley (5-37) then tore the top order apart.
Ian Wright (3-41) did the business in the middle order and the game looked a formality with the visitors 117 for 9.
However, Kushal Shah (61*) and Aiden Bell (28) threatened an incredible victory before the return of Wheatley, saw him trap Bell leg before with the losers ten runs shy.
Keyworth, who started the day in fourth place made 208 with Ian Graham, on a rare appearance, top-scoring with 61.
In the run chase, promoted Collingham had the in-form David Pipes (96*) again excelling, yet it was Adrian Kitchen who struck the telling and cruel blow off the penultimate delivery to seal the championship for the winners and heartache for the losers.
In Division F, Oxton needed a win to survive but a woeful batting performance put paid to that.
Home team Whatton and Aslockton made 194 with Ben Lambourne and Jonathan Wallis both striking fifties. In reply, Oxton collapsed to 55 all out with Lamboune taking three wickets and Phil Kirby, Simon Wallis and Tom Barratt two apiece.
This time last season Ravenshead won to stay in Division G. On Saturday, they travelled to Notts Unity II knowing a win would see them promoted. Unity made 154 before Luke Stephenson became the hero with the winning runs that will see Ravenshead join Beeston and Toton Sycamore in Division F in 2011.
Two other clubs enjoyed promotion success. Plumtree III overcame Willoughby II (160) in Division L thanks to Alex Sherriston (50*), Alex Johnson (37) and Martin Kaye (34), while Ellerslie III were promoted in Division N with 15-year-old Maneesh Mishra (51 and 4-9) and 14-year-old Peter Vladev (29* and 4-33) taking centre stage in their team's six-wicket win at home to Hoveringham II (169).
There were a couple of notable landmarks in the game between West Bridgfordians IV and already-promoted Young Lions in Division M.
Firstly, 13-year-old Ben Shaw hit a wonderful maiden century (111) out of 187, then Ardef Landa became the first Young Lions player to hit a hundred in their four-year history. For the record, Young Lions won by seven wickets.
