Home crisis for thousands hit by 'bedroom tax'
THOUSANDS of people in Notts will be pushed into a financial crisis following the introduction of the Government's "bedroom tax", it is claimed.
The Government is set to slash housing benefit for people living in council or housing association homes with more bedrooms than they need. The idea is to force people to downsize and reduce the cost of benefits.
But a Post investigation has shown a lack of available houses means that many tenants will have nowhere to go.
Among 12 housing associations in the city, only 21 one-bedroom and 14 two-bedroom properties are available – but 5,506 households need to downsize or be hit by the cuts.

And outside the city, lettings website Homesearch says only 10 two-bedroom and 12 one-bedroom properties are available in Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe.
Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood is urging the Government to reconsider the changes.
She said: "Even if people wanted to move to avoid the cut to their benefit, there is clearly nowhere for them to go. Losing 14 per cent on £71 of benefit is a huge drop and could well force people to live below the poverty line."
Work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith said the Government could not afford to pay for bedrooms that are not being used.

“Wise words 'MeAndYou'
In April Crisis Loans & Community care grants will also be gone. Now your average working person is not aware of these privileges, but millions of pounds a month are given to those on benefits who mis manage their money and decide to buy new branded trainers with their gas money instead of having do with a value pair (True claim)! April will bring about great change and all this talk of poverty is complete nonsense, living in Egypt I witnessed true poverty, where familys of 8 were having to live in Tombs as they were penniless and 5 year old children tried to sell postcards to you to afford to eat. Yes people will struggle but aren't we all right now! Until our government make living on benefits a less attractive lifestyle than earning a living our Nation Debt will continue to grow larger!!! The bedroom tax may not be the answer and I am not condoning it but I do think it's time for change!!”

Good heavens. I'm not sure where you found those words from - but they are clearly not from a fellow who is thinking logically or factually.
You've never been a tory but you're fully behind your leader!

“One is getting a little fed up with with people blaming the government colliinn! I have never been a Conservative but I see what mass loss we have left behind for our kids so im fully behind our leader at the moment.
When did some become so greedy we need housing benefit for rooms that are not not in use? When i was doing a little shopping with my hard earn money I came across 200 or so with signs saying stop taxing the poor and stop sending us into poverty, well to the small minded people the rich and working has to pay there tax for you to live so stop blaming them when you get your hobby room taken away. Also poverty is a strong word live away for our great land to see what poverty is really like.
You were all born poor, naked and helpless. Everything in your life was given to you, the food you ate, the clothes you wore, the shelter you received. You were given this because people loved you, because people you never knew worked to feed you and long before you were born people died to protect you and to give you the opportunities they never had.
Life doesn't owe you anything! You owe life”

“The Bedroom Tax is about forcing people back to work, as it is well known councils dont have alots of one bedroom places, I think it is social cleansing due to the fact poor people will be force out their houses, and wealthy council tennants move in paying full rent but then deciding the to put in right to buy, I am sure it is to promote people into working buy up council houses and the very poor will force into one bedroom boxes, and in october tennants on benefits will pay their rent for the first time, as benefits being paid direct, so it could lead to evictions, budgeting skills need to be in place, this government wants rid of welfare and social housing as it look that way short tennacies, the pension age will go up to 70 at some a point, those in council or housing assocations if live in a house alone will have work until you drop, or buy under the right to buy to your secure property or live 1 bedroom box. which most people dont want.”

“SBBhahn
I'm sorry - you're talking absolute nonsense. It won't work because it can't work. Secondly, benefit payments are already restricted in the private sector and have been for a while - it's called Local Housing Allowance. Your comments regarding private mortgages are even more absurd.
And finally, these proposals are likely to increase costs if and when people are forced to move into private sector tenancies because the HB cost will go through the roof.
Your comments, like this policy, are ill conceived nd ill informed.”

“If this works it should be extended to all receiving Housing Benefit? At the moment it will only affect those in council and housing association property but why should the tenants of privately owned property continue to get full benefit irrespective of how many unused bed rooms? In addition people with a mortgage getting benefits also get help with the mortgage but this help could be reduced to a minimum for a property to meet the same standards as those in public sector houses. A lot of scope for the future if the existing proposals can be pushed through and potentially big savings for the taxpayer so why restrict the rules to public housing?”

“There are 73 billionaires and 280,000 millionaires living in the UK.the total wealth of these people is over 750 billion pounds, yet the coalition government has seen fit to give over £40,000 a year to these people by reducing there tax from 50% to 40%.Whose side do you think our MP`s are on ?
Thousands will be reduced to poverty levels because of the so called bedroom tax. Vote Lib Dem or Conservative to see the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.”

“Ultimately the bedroom tax will either result in people living in real poverty and having to choose between eating and heating or eviction. And lets remember people on low incomes will also have to pay towards their council tax. This could mean being up to £20 a week worse off out a very limited income.
And before anyone starts carping on about getting a job, this regressive measure will also affect people working in low paid and part time employment, the disabled and people nearing retirement age who might find getting a job very difficult - people trying to do the 'right thing'.
There was a time when even Tories pretended to care about homelessness and the devastating effect it can have on people's lives. But now all they do is enact measures designed to cause homelessness and slum housing at levels we haven't seen in generations.
Whatever the problem with under-occupation, the answer is not the bedroom tax.”

“I think everyone agrees that there is a need to ensure that social housing stock is utilised effectively. This policy is ill conceived and will not work.”
