Skyscraper vision for Nottingham's skyline
SKYSCRAPERS up to 30 storeys high could be built in Nottingham, with plans for a "tall-building zone" in the city.
Sections of the Eastside regeneration area, from the Victoria Centre to Sneinton Market and the railway line, have been earmarked for the towering buildings in a new Urban Design Guide for the city.

The Victoria Centre flats are the tallest in Nottingham
Here, an acceptable building size would be almost the height of Big Ben – and higher in exceptional cases.
If it is introduced, it would be the first time Nottingham City Council has allowed the building of such towers.
The guide, which goes out to consultation today, also sets out proposals to expand the city centre by limiting car access around its eastern and southern edges.
And it puts forward plans for areas of "repair and reinvention" for historic sections of the city that need preserving and areas where bold new development ideas would be welcomed.
Coun Alan Clark, portfolio holder for neighbourhood regeneration, said: "The Design Guide offers more certainty and clarity to developers investing in the city, giving clear guidance concerning the quality and type of development expected in Nottingham."
Hilary Silvester, of Nottingham Civic Society, welcomed the design guide, but said care must be taken when deciding on the design of tall buildings.

“Incidentally, the council neither propose nor fund new office towers! They are just permitting them! So to those who say they are waste of money, remember it's developers who will build and fund them, not the council! Joey in Glasgow - towers do not give cramped spaces they give us more space because, well, they're bigger!”

“I rest my case with the voice of Andew and Joey P.
It doesn't have to be residential, quite frankly I'm sick of all the flats popping up in the city ctr.
They could be office space. I appreciate there is already office space available in Nottm ctr but at a price, a costly one. When availability increases it drives the cost down so as to fill the spaces. This in turn attracts new business and... well the results are clear.
Bring on the towers.
And anyone who says a few tall rise modern buildings would ruin our oh so pristine sky line is deluded. Our skyline is yellow for crying out loud, unless the new buildings replace windows with pigeon faeces it can¿t get any worse.”

“before the council start pie in the sky proposals they should put their minds to creating a road system in nottingham that diverts all heavy traffic away from the city by creating a true outer ring road to connect A1 / M1 and to make the inner ring road a true ring road not a mismatch of short joined up roads .”

“Why are they proposing these towers? As other the other comments have stated, no-one wants to live in cramped tower blocks, there is already an abundance of office space free and we are facing an impending recession....
The only reason I could see for building "skyscrapers" is tourism, as skyscrapers are very easily recognisable and attract visitors to the area, so long as there are viewing platforms allowed. I suggested on these forums a few months ago that Nottingham should invest in a very tall building/tower mainly on a tourism basis, for instance the CN tower in Toronto or Fernseherturm in East Berlin.
We are approaching a critical mass of attractions in Nottingham, lots of shops, restaurants, bars and a few OK museums. A new, exciting supertall structure would provide the tipping point and really cement Nottingham's reputation as the Queen of the East Midlands and a true destination in itself.”
