A PILOT scheme to help people with mental health problems back into work has been launched.

Back on Track is for anyone living in the city with mental health conditions.

They can be referred to the service via their GP, health worker, or through a self-referral system.

It aims to support people while they find work and once they are employed.

Jeremy Guy has suffered from bipolar disorder for the last 20 years, but the 49-year-old from West Bridgford said that since finding work his mental health has improved and he has suffered no remissions.

Mr Guy said a scheme like Back on Track would help him keep his current job and look for future employment.

He said: "I would like reassurance while I am working so I can have a chat if I am having difficulties and find a way to resolve them.

"I would like help in evaluating my skills and finding out what I am good at, and where I can learn to improve my skills to give me a better chance in the job market."

Once a person registers they are contacted by Back on Track staff. A plan is drawn up individually tailored to suit the person's need.

If a suitable position is found, the person is given support by the project for 52 weeks after they start.

After that, if the person feels they still need support, they can contact the service through mental health charity Rethink's 24-hour helpline.

Employment engagement manager, Janine Boyle, said: "If on a Sunday a person starts to feel nervous they can phone up and talk through how they will get to work tomorrow. The in-work support is also there for the employer. If a person has a relapse the employer can come to us for advice."

The scheme aims to support as many people as possible who have mental health issues and has cash for two years.

Work on the project began in October but it only started taking on clients last month.

Miss Boyle is now trying to raise awareness of the scheme. She also hopes prospective employers will come forward to take on clients.
