A PRIMARY school which was told by school inspectors to improve is making progress.

Brookhill Leys Primary and Nursery School, in Chewton Street, Eastwood, was told by education watchdog Ofsted to raise its standards after an inspection in October.

A letter from Ofsted now says that the necessary changes are being made.

The school was criticised because staff were employed before results of Criminal Record Bureau checks were confirmed.

The checks are compulsory to see if employees have convictions, before they are allowed to have unsupervised contact with children.

Safeguarding procedures have now been improved.

The school was also told to improve learning in English and mathematics, improve monitoring of pupil progress and improve the quality of teaching,

Governors were urged to hold the school to account for its performance.

Head teacher Jacquie Sainsbury said: "The inspector said the governors and I were identifying further improvements needed in school and their judgements have helped to improve the school.

"It has now been identified that the quality of teaching is better.

"There are more good lessons and standards are rising in every year group.

"Children are making satisfactory or good progress and we are monitoring all children well and making sure children are supported.

"We are very pleased with this result and continue to raise standards across the school.

"The improvements are thanks to the staff, children and parents at Brookhill Leys and the partnerships we have within our school community.

"Having Ofsted visit in October was not what I had wished for as a new head teacher, but it has enabled the school community to show how supportive they are and how much we care.

"We have lost some children because of the initial inspection, but most of our parents can see that we are a school going places where the children's voice is the most important one."

Staff at Wadsworth Field Primary School, in Stapleford, have been supporting teachers at Brookhill Leys since October last year.

Ofsted inspector, Usha Devi, said: "The school is making satisfactory progress in addressing the issues for improvement.

"The head teacher and governors have taken swift action to ensure the school meets statutory requirements for the safeguarding of pupils."

“Absolute rubbish. I know the person in question on a personal level and in a very different light. I feel that she has blamed the missing checks on everything and the article is missing the point completly. The parents aren't concerned about pointless pieces of A4 (sorry CRB's) but more to the point, this womans conduct. She should not be a Head and it's questionable if she should be in the profession at all. I pity anyone remotely connected to the school.”
