SOME have been enjoying the recent cold snap more than others - with shopkeepers in the city reporting a surge of customers rushing in for warmer clothes to cope with the weather.

Angela Bowler, one of the managers at outdoor clothing shop Castle Mountain and Moore on Maid Marian Way, said the business had been doing well because of the cold.

She said: "From Saturday onwards it's been really good - people are just rushing in to buy hats and gloves. They tend to be putting them on straight away - they can't even wait to have them packed.

"We hadn't sold as much stock as we usually would before Christmas - so coats which would usually be sold out by now are still here, and people are buying lots of them."

Trudie Smith, who works as a sales assistant at camping shop Millets, on Exchange Walk, said they had also seen a boom in sales.

"In the last few days we have sold hundreds of hats and gloves," she said.

"Recently we have done things like held sales to move stock. That has helped to an extent, but really the cold weather has seen us sell a lot more.

"It's been magical - it was like a miracle. With people not spending as much recently, it has been quite quiet recently.

"But strangely enough, this cold weather has worked out quite well."
