JON Harley will be prouder if he wins promotion into the Championship with Notts County than he was when he won the FA Cup with his boyhood club Chelsea ten years ago.

Harley was only 20 when he helped Chelsea win the world's most famous Cup competition in 2000, playing in every round except the final when he was an unused substitute alongside John Terry as they beat Aston Villa.

He still treasures his FA Cup winners' medal, but admits promotion with the Magpies would be an even greater achievement, after moving to Meadow Lane on a two-year deal.

"Winning the FA Cup is my greatest achievement," said Harley. "It is fantastic to have a winners' medal, and I'm sure I will be telling stories about it to my kids for years to come.

"It was a great day and a great season. The memories of it will live with me forever.

"At the time I didn't fully appreciate what it meant to win the FA Cup.

"If someone had told me to really enjoy it because it is quite rare it might have been different, but because I was young I almost expected us to be back the next season, and that I would enjoy a lot more success in my career.

"If I was able to win promotion now with Notts County I would appreciate it so much more, having been around for a while and knowing success is hard to achieve.

"Promotion is won over the course of the season too so it is maybe a bigger achievement. Winning the FA Cup is a very big achievement but I'd be prouder of winning a promotion.

"It would be great to get promotion. Winning a cup is good, but the best teams tend to win leagues."

Harley could make his full debut for the Magpies in their pre-season friendly against Cardiff City at Meadow Lane today, after playing the second half in their goalless draw against Stoke City on Thursday night.

He also hopes to play against Sheffield United at Meadow Lane on Tuesday night to improve his fitness and stake a claim for a place against Huddersfield Town on the opening day of the League One season.

"It will be nice to get a game or two under my belt," he added. "They are not easy games so they will be good tests for us.

"It's good to play Championship teams because that is the standard we want to be playing at.

"Hopefully we can do well against them and be ready to go come the opening day of the season against Huddersfield.

"It would be nice to win them and gather a bit of momentum going into the season."

Harley, who is one of six new signings the Magpies have made this summer, is already confident Notts, the League Two champions, can win promotion into the Championship.

"I wouldn't say we're a League One club, we're a club that is in League One and hopefully we can get out of this league and into the Championship," he said.
