A HANDBAG thief was caught by two women after they chased him down the road in their high heels.

Ayar Khdir punched Paris Lees in the arm and chest as she performed a citizen's arrest with a friend.

Eventually 35-year-old Khdir went "limp" and gave himself up.

Catherine Chasemore, prosecuting, told Nottingham Crown Court Khdir said: "Sorry...don't call police."

Officers arrested him and he was bailed for the robbery at 2.40am on August 6, 2005.

A warrant was issued for his arrest, but Khdir, of Burns Street, Arboretum, remained at large until December last year.

He admitted the robbery and breaching his bail at court.

Miss Chasemore said the women had been walking home in Mansfield Road, near Forest Fields, when they sat on a wall to rest their weary feet.

Khdir came along and ripped the handbag from Ms Lees, tugging it so hard he broke the strap.

Miss Lees chased him and grabbed his collar and arm and then Khdir punched her in the arm and chest.

Both women apprehended him. Ms Lees suffered a cut to her big toe from running in her heels and her coat was ripped.

Recorder Rosalind Coe QC gave Khdir a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered that he complete 40 hours of community work.

"It may well be you got a shock when they detained you. It was an opportunistic offence."

Adrian Reynolds, defending, said his client had stayed out of trouble for three-and-a-half years doing menial jobs around the country.

"It's a fairly extraordinary robbery in many ways," he said.

"The violence wasn't used in the robbery. He must have got a shock when they chased after him and overpowered him."

“Surely the name Catherine Chasemore is part of the joke . . . this is a pre-April the first story!
Ayar Khidr is North Notts for "Are you Kidding!"
Defending Council Adrian Reynolds was obviously asleep when the charges were read out as he stated "violence was not used in the robbery!" Trying punching a policeman in the chest and you will soon find that is classed as GBH.”

“Yes; I am she, the Paris Lees of the story.

I live in Brighton now and hardly ever think about that night, except to wonder if the police actually ever followed it up. It was only today when a friend sent me the link for this article that I discovered they did.

Whilst taking into account that he had broken his bail and so on I am satisfied with the punishment he has recieved. I wouldn't want anyone to go to prison because of me, plus he should be put off doing anything else wrong with that suspended sentence hanging over him.

You also have to take into account the humiliation factor. Shame on the journalist who wrote this up for playing down the scene rather than sensationalising it.

The actual incident was hilarious: I ran after the man, and when I caught up with him I realized I had no idea what I was going to do. So I tripped him up from behind. Then, taking advantage of his fall I straddled him, and pinned him arms down above his head as my friend came running down to also straddle/restrain him. She also phoned the police.

There were at least two police cars, quite possibly 3 or more, and an ambulance. The police obviously took it very seriously when we informed them that a man had mugged us and that we had apprehended him. I am not Nottinghamshire Police's biggest fan, but that night they responded quickly and effectively.

So that's how this guy got found: straddled and overpowered by two drunk girls walking back to Sherwood after a night out in town.

For me that's better than any possible custodial sentence.

    Girl power indeed.”
