NOTTS could run out of grit by Sunday and is in a 'desperate' situation - due to low national reserves.

Notts County Council only received a 60 tonne delivery today and officers do not know when they will next receive more salt.

Previously, A and B roads have been gritted as well as bus routes.

But rationing means A and B roads will be gritted over the weekend, but bus routes which do not run down those roads will not be salted.

Salt stocks are now controlled by the national salt cell, a Government advisory body, and the areas worst hit by the weather will be prioritised.

Notts County Council has received 800 tonnes of a salt and sand mix which will be put into grit bins, used on footways and for other hotspots at the request of emergency services. But it cannot be sprayed by gritters and will be spread by hand and not used on major roads.

More than 40 snow ploughs are on stand-by.

Coun Richard Jackson, cabinet member for transport and highways, said: "Earlier this week we had secured a delivery of an extra 5,000 tonnes of salt for Notts's roads.

"Since then, the coordination of salt deliveries has been centralised by the government, effectively taking control of salt deliveries out of our hands.

"We are lobbying regionally and nationally to try and get more salt for Notts. We will continue to push for a salt delivery during the weekend."

"But, unfortunately, the salt situation is now desperate in Notts and without further deliveries, we will run out by Sunday."

The council has contacted the national salt cell and is awaiting a response.

A spokesman for NCT said: "We have still got some bus routes on diversions, but we will continue running as much of a normal service as we can.

"If the roads become impassable then either we will cut them short or divert them."

“The Highways Agency, run by the government as a matter of policy keep 35 days supply of grit in store. Nottinghamshire County Council keep less than half that amount. Furthermore the County Council ordered the wrong type of grit which can't use it where it's most needed.

They are not the only Local Authority to louse up, some are worse than others, which is why the government has had to intervene.”

“But thats the whole point, it does not cost more, it costs considerably less, and it actually reduces the amount of taxes we pay for this element.

Having large stockpiles gives us a buffer, buying in such quantities also allows bulk purchasing discounts along with the ability to "spot purchase" which is to buy at periods of low demand. Salt prices are now around 3-5 times higher now, than in the summer as there is little demand during the summer.

Keeping the country running saves industry and the country vast sums of money, it also maximises profitibility and the payment of more taxation on the additional profits, so we all win.

If you bothered to read the story properly, and had the mental capacity to understand it, you will clearly see the local administration had the situation under control with salt ordered, and being delivered, itwas your beloved Labour party who intervened and screwed it all up.

Its not difficult, even for someone of your limited intellect.”

Andyman, what about some of the rightwingers on here?

And as for all that about "planning", well it's the Tory administration at County Hall who have been ineficient here.

And, if we made all the investment in to grit ETC you support then you would be complaining about your taxes!

So, the morral of the story is, if you really want more grit ETC that much then put your money where your mouth is!”

“Badger begins with an insult, so has lost before he begins.

Of course it is a case of planning, planning and contingencies for such weather conditions which affect this country with regularity, and a problem which should not create the mayhem it currently does.

Planning against such weather conditions was done by the previous Conservative Government, Labour abandoned these plans on the grounds of cost, so perhaps we have the real cause of these pathetic and lame excuses from the Labour die hards. These plans included a number of storage depots forsalt, these had excellent road and rail connections to the entire country, salt could be moved quickly to parts of England as required, this was in addition to the stored salt of local authorities.

This scheme gave a buffer to the limited supplies from the producers, and would have ensured the country did not face such problems as we do currently, and unnecessarily.”

“"Little todger expects us to suffer because of other councils who cant plan then."

Plonk it's not a case of them not planning; they've just had worse weather than we have.

And Badger I mostly vote Labour too, apart from in local elections when I vote Lib Dems as I think in my area the Lib Dem Councillors have done a good job.

'Voice Of The People' sums it up perfectly.”

“The bus route that I live on in Bingham hasn't been gritted once yet since the bad weather started, and is currently like an ice rink (only with snow on top). However, I notice the posh new estates where no buses run have been gritted quite nicely over the last few days. May I ask why this is?”
