A BID to turn Nottingham into the greenest city in the UK will begin today.

Nottingham City Council wants to cash in on the green energy revolution by attracting large-scale investment in environmental technology, which would cut residents' fuel bills and create hundreds of jobs.

The council's plans include:

A scheme to more than double the size of the city's district heating system, which is already the biggest in the country and provides cheap and secure green energy to thousands of city homes.

A large-scale photo-voltaic project which could mean solar panels going up on thousands of roofs across Nottingham, and also create "green jobs".

A cutting-edge "Energy Park" in Bulwell where new businesses will be powered by food scraps, garden trimmings and wood waste from across the city.

Eradicating landfill by making recycling more efficient and picking out more materials than ever for reuse – including the leftover ash from the city's incinerator for road aggregate.

Deputy city council leader Councillor Graham Chapman insisted : "It is not just some great big idealised approach that we want to be green.

"There is money in waste and there is money in energy.

"The whole aim is to be green in order to provide green energy to make us competitive.

"We are already the most energy self sufficient city in the UK and we want to maintain that lead and increase it and compete with European cities."

    “Paul

Do you really believe that we are lucky to Live in Nottingham?

This would be the same Council that is spending Millions of pounds on a replacement street lighting system that is 2nd rate, that uses more energy than the cutting edge equivalent available in the UK, simply because the previous Government would not stump up for it?

Are we meant to consider ourselves lucky that the Council has championed the increased use of burning more waste?

Do you suppose that on the smallest levels measurable that the Council would rather print endless amounts of marketing material that propagandises its successes regardless of its actual failures?

Do you honestly think that people are so indoctrinated into feeling that mock consultations should run roughshod over the visible will of its electorate?

The Council should act with humility and decency but never will as long as it is prepared to treat people like cattle and is led by a donkey.”

“"NCC residents do not know how lucky they have it, especially compared to the surrounding councils"

You're having a laugh Paul. Nottingham City Council is one of the worst performing councils in the country. It is two star rated. They would much rather spend our money on the £6m a year Nottingham Arrow & barely legal Soviet style lamp post banners telling us how great they are.”

“Some of these comments really have to make you laugh.

NCC launched a whole energy strategy not just a few gimmick schemes that are listed here, have the people that are actually commenting actually read it or are you basing your whole opinion on 200 word article?

The people who live outside the city make me laugh as it does not even effect them and i do see the surrounding councils like rushcliffe, gedling or broxtow doing anything to help their residents.

for the person who said the council should invest in things like loft insulation, if i was you i would type the words Nottingham Warm Zone into google, you might just find a council funded scheme for all none social households within the city, and NCC are also improving their own housing stock.

NCC residents do not know how lucky they have it, especially compared to the surrounding councils”

“And just what is Sentinel of Stafford doing, regularly driving through the streets of Nottingham late at night and in the early hours of the morning?

    Makes you wonder.

Why doesn't he just drive through the streets of Stafford?”

“Loxley House is very nice. All the employees have been told to use public transport. Appart from the 200 car spaces reserved for the top managers of course. In such a small geographical area, it is interesting to note how our beloved Chief Executive, Jane Todd value the use of Taxis and reserved car parking to travel a mile between offices.

She sheds not a tear for the climate. Go on Jane go that extra carbon mile.”

“If the council want to attract more employers to Nottingham then perhaps more effort can be put into providing good standards of basic services such as clean streets and lower business rates instead of indulging in gimmicks.”

“I think it's debatable to describe the district heating scheme as 'green' seeing as it is based on incineration of household rubbish.

Also, I think it would be better to invest in solar water heating than PV tech. Much simpler and cheaper (and PV has major environmental implications involved with its manufacture) and has the advantage of cutting down gas usage. Gas is a fossil fuel which doesn't really have a practical green replacement and there are energy security issues with it as well..

You can already sign up for green electricity and maybe NCC could provide a small financial incentive to council tenants at least (easy to administer via the rent account) if they agree to sign up to it. That and the council itself buying green leccy would be quite a simple way of reducing greenhouse gases.”

“Green jobs, green economy! Pft! No such thing. It's a scam and a sham. Greenism is a big consumer. A con of the rich elite such as Al Gore. "Buy this or you might die." Oldest trick in the book.”

“First we was going to become the cleanest and we are still far from it.

Now the greenest, its us that's green if the council thinks we are going to buy this one as well.
Why not go for the crime-less first and when you get that anywhere near right to which you have been trying for long enough maybe you can go back to getting our city clean.
What a waste of NEP space”
