Forest tried to respond but another break by Newcastle down the wing left them exposed but a fantastic last second clearance off the line by Lauren Howard prevented Newcastle doubling their lead.
Forest's Jemma Connor-Iommi then shot from distance but it was straight at the keeper.
From a Forest throw, Aileen Whelan crossed into the box for Amber Hughes to latch onto the ball and she hit the back of the net to Forest level at 1-1.
Jess Hickey put Amber Hughes through for another chance but the keeper was able to get it away just before half time.
Forest won an early corner in the second half that was taken low and rebounded off the Newcastle defence before Katie McLoughlin fed Aileen Whelan but she shot high but the keeper had it covered.
But Newcastle scored after a quick break with Forest unable to recover.
Laura O'Neill then drove forward and cut the ball through to Aileen Whelan but the Newcastle defence was there first to clear away, before Jemma Connor-Iommi's low effort went well wide while Stephanie Smith drove through midfield and shot but the keeper saved.
Forest broke through Jess Hickey, who passed to Aileen Whelan to lay off for Connor-Iommi to shoot but the shot went agonisingly wide. Aileen Whelan then headed just over from a corner.
Forest finally got the equaliser when Amber Hughes won the ball in midfield and put a great weighted ball through the Newcastle defence for Whelan to latch onto and shoot and it found the back of the net.
Forest kept the pressure on with a cheeky chip from Stephanie Smith saved by the keeper, while at the other end a long shot by Newcastle was headed on but saved and held by Natasha Meade.
Jemma Connor-Iommi fired in a corner and the resulting cross went straight through giving Forest Ladies the lead with only a few minutes left.
The remaining minutes saw Forest retain possession and run the clock down to win the match.
